Anyone ever crack their 99 runner strut tower?

I 'm doing my off season runner rahab and i always take time with a flashlight to stare at parts of the truck.......and without fail, scary things come to light.
Time to break out the welder i guess.

I wonder if that bolt was just a little tighter compared to the rest then taking more of the load

It really can`t go any further to really fix this correct it should be taken all apart.

Once it is all apart I would just put a new one on and be done if I messed with it at all.

I wonder how long it was like that??

I had a rough time this past summer escaping a flood in southern. Az.
We had to wheel through many washes to side step a flood.....it might have happened then.
No way am i going to replace the strut tower. I need to do struts soon so i'll just weld it top and bottom.

Agree. Remove the paint around the area. V-groove the crack, and lay a bead. If worried, you could always cut a 1/8" or 3/16" steel plate 'donut' and plate the top of the mount.

I guess it is just the nature when you have done these kind of repairs for customers for a few years .

One looks at things different.

i may lay a nice high quality washer over the bolt hole and weld the crack and around the washer. otherwise, the bolt hole area will be uneven and grinding the weld will only weaken it.

End result before spraying some black paint.......i buried a nice thick high grade washer under the weld.
Amazing how thin the tower steel is....
