I was in the local Canadian Tire today and realized that they sell AMSOIL. Cost is $9.99/quart.

Down the aisle.. Mobil 1 5w30 EP for $11.49/quart. Regular Mobil 1 Synthetic was like $9.69 or so..

I was surprised that the AMSOIL was cheaper!

What are you guys paying on average in the US?

6.99 a quart for mobil 1 when its on sale here. Only 1 type of mobil 1 where I buy it, supersyn If I remember right. Never saw amsoil for sale anywhere around here in ny

He is prolly a independent dealer just like me. We all can offer the same thing $10 for 6 months or $25 a year to be a preffered customer and buy at dealer cost. Thats all it should cost there is no max or min limit to what you can buy.

FYI for other members.. I got him to send me the price list.. you can even buy some tools and things for dealer cost, not just oil!

When I switched to Amsoil early this year, I went to a local dealer and it came out to $7.20/qt (5w-30). Most of the local guys will offer you at least a 10% discount, if not, up to 20%. Great product. I'd buy it over M1 in a heartbeat.

me too..M1 is highly overrated.... personally i go for any syn thats on sale. Advance Auto carries Valvoline synpower buy one get one free a few times a year so i get 2 cases. 1 i pay for and the other is free... with those 3.4's no need in paying full price for synthetics. they are very easy on oil and with todays dino oils like penzoil, maxlife and etc they will protect that motor very very well up to 6k miles...

I have always used Mobile one because that's "what dad ran". But it is only about $7/qt. at the normal auto stores here and at wal mart I get 5 qts for like $23 or something. I have heard of amsoil but never used it. Any noteworthy differences?

One oil that is getting very good review is Pennzoil Platinum. I've been running that for two oil changes now and have been satisfied. It's easier to find than Amsoil and is getting better reviews than Mobil 1.

Nothing wrong with Amsoil, other than their marketing. I used to run Amsoil all the time when a local store kept it in stock. Then they started having all these different formulations, I couldn't tell what I was buying anymore, and the store got flaky keeping sufficient quantities on hand. Between the marketing and the formulation variety, my poor brain just couldn't take it, so I switched. I've still got some tasty Amsoil 20W-50 sitting in the garage, waiting for the right engine to put it in.

TONS. amsoil is a true synthetic, M1 and other over the counter "syns" are really just heavily refined dino oils with additives... by law they can label their non syn oils a synthetic... however, amsoil is a true synthetic made in a lab... amsoil has proven time and time again to show low wear values and longevity compared to M1 and other oils... Penzoil plantinum would be the oil i ran if i paid full price for "syn" oils.. hands down

You could have got the 5 quart jug for ~$23 like khoopes said. That's what I do for my 22RE.

I just switched from castrol, the first change the initial switch, that oil got dirty QUICK. I was told because its cleaning out the crap left over from all the years of dino. Like pretty black in under 1000 miles

But then again, i don't know if it is really cleaning out the stuff left over

Synthetic in general is overrated. It makes sense for fleet owners, as the labor expense of changing dino oil more often is offset by longer intervals with synthetic. For people that work on their cars, the cost of changing oil is $0.

Proper dino oil changes haven't caused problems for anyone in the last 100 years. Synth does only 2 things: gives you bragging right, and makes your wallet lighter.

Synthetic has saved me time and has cost me the same as doing a couple of oil changes a year vs one every 10 months or so which is between 8-9k on my truck. I recently had a compression test and at 140k miles my truck has surprising results that were near stock levels when new. It cost me about $25 for a jug of M1 (@Wally world) and a PureOne filter comes in at about $6 so $31 a year for an oil change is fine by me.

The big diff with synthetic is it's ability to maintain it's consistency when encountering extreme heat levels especially associated with turbo cars and resists "coking" on the turbo bearing much better than a Dino oil and it's other plus it pours better when the temps go well below zero.

If you really don't strain your vehicle and are religious about changing the oil when it's really needed then synthetic isn't worth the extra cost.

i drive 30k+ miles so it saves me time and money. i change every 7-8k with BOGO synpower... so not exactly a true statement my friend.. i pay for a syn that is priced at dino.... i try not to buy syn at full price. if i use a dino its strictly penzoil or maxlife

Amsoils not hard to find. I can make you a prefered customer or a dealer and you can get it whenever or for whoever you want. Only takes about 10 minutes.
