To all the black 4runner owners out there

hey,
what do you all of you use for wax or polish on your trucks. I just gave my new 2003 black 4runner its first bath now it need its first wax. What brand should i use, toyota told me to use the softess most non-abrasive wax i could find. They recommended Carbright or something like that. What do you all recommend. They are painted with a clearcoat right? i thought that was pretty standard these days?

For the most non-abrasive I recommend Zainos

Order some Z1,Z5,Z2,Z6 and maybe Z18(clay bar) for starters. This is a polymer based polish and will last for approximately 6 months.

The proceedure I would follow is this:
Wash the Runner using Dawn dish washing liquid. It is very alkaline and will remove all oils and old wax.

Dawn wash – ClayBar – Dawn wash - Dry – Z1 then Z5 – Wait – Remove polish – Z-6.

The next day Z6 then Z2 then Z6 if the swirls are covered with a single coat of Z5.

If you don't want to clay it first start with the Dawn wash and do Z1, Z5 and then Z6.

For more info on detailing check out Autopia Detailing forums.
Autopia

I also recommend MicroFiber Towels to avoid swirl marks from polishing. PakShak

I use Zaino on all three "black" vehicles that we have. Here is a
thread with good discussion:

I have been bouncing back and fourth between Zymol and Griot's Garage. I lean more towards the Griot's Garage stuff. For the Leather, i use the Zymol Treat. My seats feel like butter.

Do you guys recommend Zaino's for all colors or just black? What about the best leather treatment: cleaner and treatment for light color leathers?

It used to be that Toyota would not put Clear Coat on White, Red and Black colors. They only used it for the metalic colors.

I'm not sure what they are doing now. But the clear coated finishes generally hold up better than the non-clear coated finishes. I do think there are more noticeable problems with swirls on the clear coat finish.

dukestr, should be able to tell us if the black has clear coat on it...........

I'm using Zainos on a white Tacoma and a clear coated light gold 4-Runner and both look great.

Zainos is the easiest, user friendly polish I've ever used. It does not stain black rubber or vinyl trim. You can apply it to the plastic or glass front and rear light lenses and the black plastic trim around the side windows and front grill. It also works great on chrome.

Clearcoat isn't currently used on any Toyota/Lexus in black, red, white or yellow. I got this answer directly from TMS a couple of years ago when researching the question for another car board.

For leather treatment, I use Lexol cleaner and conditioner (separate products) that work on any color leather. They're petroleum and silicone free, readily available most anywhere, and the price is right.

Another vote for the Zymol 2 part leather cleaner and conditioner. Their cleaner actually works pretty good on light colored plastic too and I haven't seen any ill effects.

BT17R is correct, clear coat does not come 'standard' with Toyota and Lexus. That's why they offer the "Perma Plate/Ultracoat" separately.
Thanks for the compliment Los Gatos..our family have all black vehicles. My Dad has a black LS400. I am selling the IS300 that is on the picture. Here is the link to the ad at carsdirect.com My wife and I don't need three vehicles. I think the 4Runner and the Sequoia will take care of my twin girls easily
