After laying under my '96 last weekend and staring at black goo, (what i thought was thick oil), I now realize what it was. I sprayed it with engine degreaser which didn't cut it at all so I scraped it off with scraper. It scraped off like pencil shaving in a pencil sharpener. I suppose I should have left it alone.

So I read through all 6 pages of this thread and only had one mention of someone buying some Tacomas and selling them back to Toyota. If I buy a 1998 Tacoma this week and it fails inspection next week do I get paid 1.5 KBB excellent condition, only what I paid for it or nothing at all?

you should get 1.5X KBB however I know they sent me a letter about my 98 saying if I didn't have the frame sprayed by toyota by oct 2011 (i think) it would no longer be covered... so I'm not sure how that works into it...

I got several letters from corporate Toyota about this with a deadline of yesterday to get inspected.... never took it in as my '00 is in perfect shape; benifits of 'left coast' vs. pennsylvania where I grew up with salt all over the roads all winter. (which also attracts deer BTW; I-80 and I-81 are always RED)
that sucks about the 'fix' spray... sounds like some rhino liner in a can that they sling on there.
I would cry for days if I found even a fraction of that rust ^^. had that on an old mazda b2000, my dad put his fingers right through the frame when crawling under to remove a tree branch that got caught. tree branch was thru the frame too!!

My 03 Tacoma just went in for a frame
What else should i replace ?
My list includes
02 Tacoma frame replacement
Bottle of ant seize
New shocks rear
New sprigs front
New shocks front
New muffler
Oil and filter
Gas filter
Change all fluids
Front Diff seal leaking on passenger side replace driver’s side
Smell of gas unsure if leaking
Bring in skid plates
Ask about front control arms and rear springs if I want to take them back.

So i took my 96 taco in several years ago for inspection, passed with flyin colors. This weekend i was under it replacing o2 sensors and i can poke my finger thru the frame. They told me i had 15 yrs after i got it inspected was this 15 yrs from inspection?

Yes that's what I would like to know driver's side frame is really scary this was supposedly inspected a few years back. I wonder if they even looked at it? I can poke a hole into the frame with index finger by the rear shackle , wondering if I should have the frame welded or if I still qualify for the repair/buyback. I 'd prefer to keep the 98'tacoma it is a wonderful lil truck

I just bought a 97 Taco. The frame is very nice, a California truck. I no longer love there. Is there any recompense undercoating or treatment so I can keep it nice? Don't want my nice truck to rust away.

Toyota had begun receiving a few reports from customers that excessive corrosion was occurring on the frames of some older Tacoma pickups, specifically 1995 to 2000 models. The Japanese automaker determined that during this half decade of production, some Taco frames may not have received the kind of corrosion protection from the factory that's needed to withstand harsh climes, especially ones where salt is used to deice roadways. While there is no recall and Toyota says that the number of instances where it has found rust go beyond the surface of the frame to penetrate the metal is small, the automaker is pulling an unorthodox move and doing something about anyway.
Toyota is extending the rust perforation warranty on all 1995-2000 Tacoma pickups, some 813,000 units, to 15 years from the original date of purchase, AND you don't have to be the original owner, or the second or the third even. Anyone who owns a Tacoma from this era and finds rust perforation on the frame can have his or her truck officially inspected for rust damage, in which case Toyota will either repair or buy back the truck regardless of its condition. Owners will start receiving letters by mid-March, and those who don't can visit a dealership for a free inspection.

HA! I just got onto this forum today, a week to the day after having my frame repaired for rust perforation, specifically where the front of the rear leaf spring meets the frame: the frame collapsed and the spring went INTO the frame and jammed there. Drove down the road at an angle, heard some noise, looked liked the shackle had frozen in place, but nope: the ass end of the truck was hanging on by rust!
I'm going to my local dealer to see what happens. Truck originally from PA (rust belt), now in TX where rust is NOT an expected event. Body shop thinks the rest of the frame is okay (apparently some dirt kept frame from draining?), let us see now what Toyota has to say about it.

99 Tacoma sr5
My Tacoma doesn’t have any rust problems at all except underneath in some places. The person who owned it before must’ve kept her in a garage or something. Does anyone else have a problems with rust on their 99 Tacoma’s? Maybe it was a good year for them...

If your profile photo is any indication of where you live and where the truck has spent its life, that's why it's not rusty. Nothing special about 99 so far as I know.
My truck (a 98) lived in northern Utah for the first four years of its life, then Montana. Definitely a winter climate, but in Montana at least, they're only just starting to use corrosive chemicals on the roads. It used to always be just sand and gravel. Lots of cracked windshields but very little rust. And the truck was always in a garage, until I bought it. I have a very small patch of surface rust on the passenger side, otherwise the frame is solid. There a ton of these trucks still on the road where I live. It was mostly a north eastern and mid western problem of frames cracking in half or getting bought back and, unfortunately, crushed. Such a shame that so many of the absolute best engines Toyota had ever built up to that point went to the crusher, along with all the other perfectly good parts.

The buy back would probably only be blue book, and that's nothing $. Are they recalling just Tacoma's or 4runners too?
