Aisin manual hub conversion

How many members here have done the Aisin manual hub conversion on their 3rd generation 4Runner's? I know on the older 4Runner's the Aisin hubs just bolt on the outside , the 3rd gen 4Runners have to have the whole spindle and CV axle shaft pressed into the steering knuckle , replace the bearings, need a 20 ton press, and so on. I really dislike having the axels turn with the wheels, and I will be putting in 3 inch spacers on the front springs soon, so by installing the hubs more lift is great without the CV BUZZ. Thanks.

done it, easiest way is to just grab some taco spindles and get rid of your abs.

If you keep abs you have to have all the stuff pressed out and in with new wheel bearings, and seals. That is quite the task in itself.

i really like my aisin hubs.

ive done it and still have my abs its a total pain in the ass but its totally worth it u get better gas mileage too so that always a plus

Hi there.
did the conversion on my 2004 Tacoma 4x4 TRD 5 speed manual. Yep is a pain but in my honest opinion worth it.
Not cheap, in my case spent about $1100 using a set of Aisin hubs that I found in the Yota junk yard.
Aisin hubs need to be newer than 1994.5, meaning newer generation Tacomas; everyone I asked told me that older ones don't fit / work.
Aisin from Tacomas 1995 till 2002 are light grey color in the center.

Can someone be a little more specific about parts? Exactly which Tacoma spindles do I need? I'd much rather keep my abs for highway driving. I need the whole outer cv joint, meaning new axles entirely right? Are the spindles and all that stuff just needed because of the abs ring? I've searched on this topic and can't find anything. Please
help!

For $1100, I'd buy an ARB front locker and forget the hubs. Mess around with the ADD if you want 2wd Low.

I think he wants the benefits of reduced CV wear, gas mileage, etc.

A front locker doesn't take care of the vibrations you get from a bad cv joint.

Here we go.
The easiest route is to purchase the whole kit from DOWNEY OFF ROAD, someone mentioned that they closed shop, not sure all I can tell you is that I bought my KIT from them.
There is another outfit in Colorado that sells the same kit, about $1100.
Do a MSN / GOOGLE search ...toyota manual hub convertion and should bring it up.
If you are trying to buy the parts on your own and think is going to be more economical I honestly believe that you will end up spending more money and time. Take it from a guy that went through an FJ40, owned 2 FJ60's and 1 FJ80.
If you are doing the conversion on a Tacoma from 2000 to 2004 you use the same axles you have on the truck. The installation of the kit keeps your ABS ring and I can assure you that works.
I personally bought a set of AISIN hubs from a TOYOTA junkyard, I was darn lucky because they are very very scarce.
Your only other option is to find a TACOMA 4 cylinder from 1997 to 2001 already with the hubs from factory, you just swap the whole spindle. You will be very fortunate if you find it and probably will be more than $1k.

Wrong....

Did my conversion for about 400 bucks, including parts and new bearings. You don't use the same axles, unless you take them apart and add the manual hub outers onto them......

Spindles usually cost 50-100 bucks, then new cvs from advanced = 150 bucks, then another 100 for aisin hubs and you have yourself a kit.

So what's all this I hear about the add having a different spline count than the manuals? Is that what the new spindles are for? Thanks for all your help guys

don't have different spline count..... it's all 27 spline. Your spindles have a drive flange built into them, where as the manual hub spindles drive flange is the hub...

Sorry to ask so many questions, but are you sure that the v6 limited runners aren't different than your 2.7 5speed? Do you have a pushbutton 4wd on the differetial shifter knob? Thanks again

same front and rear diffs from the factory, different gearing but same differentials.

So just to confirm, I've found a spindle on car-part.com but it's from a v6, does this mean its add? If I can find spindles that are abs compatible, will I still have to press out the abs ring from mine, or do you have to do this when replacing wheel bearings anyway? Thanks a bunch crolison, I've been having a hell of a time trying to piece this together.

One more thing, the warn hubs I'm looking at are 26 spline, for 95-01 tacos w/ factory manual hubs, is 26 right?

If it's v6 there is a chance that it's manual hub, you'd have to call the junkyard to confirm. I highly doubt you find spindles with abs and manual hubs.... thats like a needle in a haystack....I've never seen them.

Basically how it will go down if your wanting to keep abs is.

1. press the manual hub junk out of the new spindle.
2. press out your junk on your add spindle
3. press new bearings and manual hub junk int your spindles with abs ring

Warn hub for 95-01 taco with work. I'd try to find some Aisin's though, they are stronger and smaller.

I had a couple of questions about this.

Could I get these, all for a 98 4wd 4cly Tacoma:
WARN locking hub kit 202.99
TEMKIN Wheel Bearing 109.99 x2
CV half shafts 130.99 x2
And I think last time I had bearing pressed it is was $25 per hub
Total = $735

Not cheap but cheaper than other places. All this stuff was on the autozone website.

Also will the Manual hubs off an early 80s truck work? The guy who I am getting mt parts car from has one sitting there with the manual hubs. I was thinking about asking him to throw those in with the 4runner.

So I went to denver and picked up two spindles and two half shafts from an 01 4cyl taco. They look the same as my add on the outer part of the hub, but thats OK right? Guy at the shop said they're non add. They have green axles like my Dad's 98 4cyl. I'll be putting in the manual hubs sometime this week and let you guys know what happens.

Car-part.com is where I found mine, they claim to have some that are ABS w/o add but they're farther away from me than denver. Thanks again Crolison!
