Aisin Hub Painting
I received my Aisin hubs from the Ebay auction. They were looking pretty rough and had some red paint on them (the red paint was to tag them I think - came right off) Anyway, the body of the hub is a nice bright silver (now that it's clean). I am rethinking what I'll do with these for painting. Hence another poll.
Does anyone have a close up pic of the Aisin Hubs with the factory alloy wheels? I think there is going to be a gap between the hub the wheel.
I may still go with my original thought (black hub body, black cap, and dark blue dial (as discussed in a prior poll), but I wanted to get some opinions on a couple of other ideas.
Also, I need to get the paint off of the cap and dial. The material is aluminum. I remember seeing something about aircraft paint stripper, but can't remember anything else.

Notice he has new bolts too.
I did not do them when I had mine done, but I wish I did.
It spiffs them up a notch.
Aircraft paint stripper is the choice weapon to strip them down with.
Jim used it on his, and I used something very similiar.
The stuff is nasty, so don't get high off of it.

Hey Corey,
It looks like he has a sleeve of some sort around the hubs. Did he cut the end off his center caps? Looks CLEAN! I am going to stop at the dealer and see about new bolts.

Hub Body
Does anyone know what the hub body is made of? It's heavy like steel, but no finish (or rust). Is it stainless or is it chromed steel? Anyone know?

You are welcome.
His caps are stone stock.
He did a great job paiting them too.
Baked them in the oven to set the paint up nice & hard.
You will have to check for his posts when he got the hubs to see what temp to set the oven at to bake the parts at.

I think the hub body must be solid. I was scouring off some rust the other night off a pair with a Dremel and wire brush and never got through any coating.

Thanks for the insight guys. I had to get a set of snap ring pliers for the c-clips. They were a bit tough to get off.
On the hub body, should I clear coat it so it doesn't rust? I looks real purty all shiny. I have some of that Eastwood Nyalic Clear for protecting polished metal. The only thing I'm afraid of is it getting chipped and coming off.

Priming?
Alright, I have everything torn apart and cleaned - ready to paint. Do I need to prime the dial and ring before painting. I stripped them to bare metal with the Mar Hyde Aircraft stripper. I plan to bake the paint on after spraying. Also, how hot and how long for the baking?

Painted and Ready to Assemble
Well, I got them painted. Just need to grease and assemble.
I used SEM Trim Black for the ring (kind of a satin black) and Plastikote Import Color Toyota Dark Blue Metallic 5715 for the dials. I also hit the dials with clear. I left the ring satin cause I liked the contrast. It's gonna be a shame to get 'em coated with mud...

Cebby, lookin' good, lookin' good. If I had those hubs, I'd be afraid of getting em dirty. Why dont you put em up some place.... mantle, trophy case, and just LOOK at em for a while. I dont know. 3, maybe 5 days. Really let the paint cure. Then, after I get mine on...... S#@*!! Where's the delete key????
Bad news on the P.U. tail lights. Our lights bolt in inside the tail gate. All the truck tails I saw today had screws in through the lenses into the 1/4's of the box.
What was the snag w/ the imported lenses? Cost?

Cebby, I was talking w/ a friend who used to work at the local toy dealership about swapping the hubs out. He said we DONT need the 54mm socket w/ our ADD hubs. He said that you need it for the AUTO hubs, then he went off about the switch.... (WAY over my head stuff) ANYWAY, he said you just pull the ADD hubs by removing a 12 mm bolt w/ washer. (and all the 10mm nuts & cone washers, of course)
Did I confuse him somehow?? He sure was positive he knew what hub switch I was talking about.

OK, I'm a dork
Duh - I don't know why I had it in my head that I needed the socket. I must have got confused on which tools I needed for which hubs. :confused: If I ever repack my wheel bearings, will I need it? Who am I kidding, I'll never do that myself...If I don't need it, it's going back!!
