Air Conditioning

Well, its time.

We are taking a trip on the 19th, and its time to get the A/C fixed
in my truck. Any tips, tricks or ideas of a place to start?

When I bought the truck the A/C did not work so I have no idea
what may need replacing.
Everything is there, and I even have a couple of compressors
lying around.

Where would be a good place to buy driers, or evap cores?

88 PU, 2.4 by the way.

Castrol,

Have some patience, my man!

As for "where to start", I would recommend that you pick up a manual for your 88 (Chiltons/Haynes is ok, but the OEM Factory FSM are the best) and identify all the parts that are associated w/ your A/C system. Then, if you have access to the parts list, do a quick scan of what it will cost to fix it yourself. Try ebay for parts sheets. I just bought one for my wife's Camry for $10 (including shipping).

As for where to buy, I always buy my stuff from partznet.com. They've been very competitive in terms of price and delivery is always fast. I'm not sure if they stock 88 parts. Then your next best bet is your local junkyard or also try http://www.car-parts.com

If it looks out of your range or capability, call a few dealerships and independents.

Good luck,
Bob

Hey Wade, Start with putting some gauges on your system and seeing what kind of pressure you have. But really we need more info Is your compressor even engaging ? IMO the Chilton's book on your truck has a great section on AC diagnostics at least that's a good start.

Heh, sorry, I am used to the other boards I hang out on, where
responses come within minutes...

At this point, I couldn't even tell you if the system is sealed. I am
going to do some checking on it soon, but I have a feeling there
isn't an ounce of R-12 in there, and probably a hole somewhere.
Just my gut feeling. No, there is no compressor actuation at all.

What do you even need A/C here for Castol? I was on my way to the softball game tonight and I drenched my tshirt before I even stepped out of the runner after opening the door. Humidity today must have been 1000000%!!!!! did you get that electrical storm that blew through?

on a more related topic, are you sure those compressors you have laying around are any good? I thought that if atmosphere, or at least moisture, got into them they were pretty much shot, maybe that's the condensor and drier I'm thinging of.

Oh yeah, we got one hell of a storm up here in Spring yesterday.
Was quite fun.

Compressors... hmmm I am not sure about that, but either way,
they are capped off, both of them, so they should be okay. I got
them last trip to the junkyard... I only wanted one, I bought one,
and the other one, the guy insisted on me taking, and threw it in
for free when I bought my replacement exhaust down tube. Go figure.
