AHHHHHHH!!!!! What'd I do???? What'd I do?!
I am on an adrenaline high right now, I was driving home from work when my idler pulley seized! I felt the engine slow down and then smelt the rubber burning. I pulled over to a gas station shutting the engine off before I had even stopped. Opened the hood and smoke came pouring out. The belt was frayed and melted right there where the pulley was. The belt was REALLY hot same with the pulley. I went to autozone and got a wrench and loosened the retaining bolt to see if I could get the pulley moving again. It went but was smoking the entire time, not alot, but it was definately smellable . for lack of a better term. Autozone didn't have a pulley available on their computer, and I couldn't leave the car there because its a bad neighborhood. So I drove home, the longest ten minutes of my life. I didn't drive over 35mph, and kept in 4th gear when at 35 to keep RPMs down, and with every down hill put it in neutral to put them down further.
Now my question is, how much damage did I do????? I am really scared about haveing thrown off timing or destroying my air pump or I don't know what. I guess I had better make it clear, the belt that the pulley was turning with was not my alternator belt, it was the one in front of it. It has a tensioner right in front of the 22R emblem (the one that seized), and goes around a pulley to the bottom right that has some hoses coming off, an air compressor or something maybe? I don't have AC though, so maybe not? The belt then goes down to another pulley that both belts seem to turn at the base of the block.
Please tell me I only need a new pulley, I am leaving for San Diego on saturday and don't wanna be there the entire time knowing my truck is out of commision.

Maybe it's just me, but I don't know how a seized pulley would damage anything unless it was on something that wasn't just a tensioner. I would just replace the pulley. I think you should be ok.

Yeah... I'm not really sure if anything would have gotten damaged... but then again, I don't know too much about that stuff. Its more as precautionary measures and me being so freaked out and on that rush.

That deffinatly is the power steering pump belt and idler. If the idler stopped its bad and probably has a broken bearing.
This is kind of a big decision for you. Should you get a new Genuine Toyota idler ass'y or a junkyard special? In your case i'd probably get a new one.
On a side note, a couple of winters ago mine started howling loudly on a really cold morning. While it was running I dripped a little synth motor oil from a can/nozzle between the moving and non moving parts. It got quiet fast and has been quiet since. Perhaps oiling pullies for the V belts should be added to the list of regular maintainence on our older stuff that is near or over 200,000 miles.

I had power steering, when it seized I didn't notice any sluggish steering, but I only made two turns, one right and one left to get into the parking lot. Over 200,000? I haven't even broken 100,000. I am sitting at 94.5k

1) Replace the belt and pulley (and maybe) the bracket.
2) Call it good!
Less than 100K on an '87??? Its just a baby! Take it on a long road trip to make it feel loved. You must only drive it twice week.

I drive it everyday, and three times a week I go on my 14 mile work drive. The guy before me had it parked and basically only drove it when it snowed. I bought it with 78,000miles. In just over a year, I have logged the 16,000 extra miles.
Tomorrow I am calling Checkers, Napa, and if need be some stealerships to get the pulley. The belt checkers has, and I might just have to clean any residue on the pulleys.
Also, do you have the 22R or 22RE, cuz I just did a "mod" earlier taking off the funnel/air intake tube that leads to the airbox to open it up a little more and to shorten the amount of tubing the air has to travel. I actually knock my head back if I floor it at about 3000rpms, thats how much throttle response improved.

That "mod" does nothing but make the motor breathe hotter air. It may make less restriction but its hot air from behind the radiator and right above the exhaust manifold. As far as your head snapping back, maybe you need a stronger neck.

I've dealt with this before. If the pulley didn't warp you can knock the bearing out and get the numbers off it.. go to a bearing supply shop and replace just the bearing it will save you some dough. Don't think you'll fin the pulley assembly any where but the dealer or a 'junk' yard. As for damage I think others have covered it. I drove a yota to Cali from Utah with a seized steering idler pulley with no problems just left the belt a bit loose so it would slip over the seized pulley. Hey i couldn't find the bearing where I was. new bearing same pulley no problems since
good luck

If I can't find a bearing shop or a good enough used one in a junkyard, I'll definately contact you TOR, the dealers here want $140 for it.

A big thanks to you growinseed! I found a bearing shop here in san diego, and a whopping $13 later, my pulley is like new. The old bearing was pretty bad, it was missing like 3 or 4 balls, and the clamp like thing that held all the balls together was torn apart. It musta gotten pretty hot because all along the inside of the bear, where the balls were, it had a blue sheen.
