Advice re Potential Purchase

Looked at a 4Runner yesterday and would like some advice regarding pricing. It's a 1997 Limited w/137,000 miles and eLocker. One owner, full records, with all maint up to date. Vehicle is clean for it's age, no rust, and doesn't appear to have any leaks. Dives good and straight, no shimmies or shakes under braking or at speed. Steering is tight and smooth.

It'll need tires right away, and there is a repairable tear in the passenger seat where the leather has pulled away from the stitching.

All-in-all, a nice looking truck. Said he'd take $7200, nothing lower. What do you guys think? Am I crazy for not jumping on this truck??

Primary usage for the short term will for DD duties, road trips, and general off-road excursions (camping, hiking, light expedition, etc.).

Sign into eBay Motors, enter the info you gave and click on the "Completed Listings" link up top. There, you'll see that in the past two weeks 21 similar 'Runners were listed, only 7 actually sold and the final selling prices for that mileage averaged about $4,000. Print out the list, including those that didn't sell, and show it to the seller. If it makes no impression, wait for another deal. That's what I do with local sellers and it usually saves thousands.

BT17R makes a good point. Although, I will tell you that it needs a bit more adjustment than that. Don't forget one important thing on those deals - Location! You must also add to the final price the expense to get that truck home. I recently got a great deal on an out of state truck, but had to pay $1050 for shipping. Still got a great deal though.

All in all, w/the details on that Runner you're looking at. I'd say it's probably worth now, about $5500-5800 w/the SUV resale drop.

^That's a really good suggestion, knowing what similar vehicles are actually selling for is more important than what people on say Autotrader are listing them for.

Also, I've always liked to use Edmunds TMV pricing to get a good idea about what a vehicle is actually selling for in the real world. I think you can run TMV for used cars/trucks. It could be another source to print out and negotiate with the seller. If he's really wanting to sell you should be able to knock a couple thousand off his list price. If he's not, well, you can't do much about it. He could be waiting for someone to pay the full list price.

Good Luck! A Limited Runner w/ the e-locker is a SWEET setup!

Thats the average going price for a 4Runner in nice shape round these parts.

I would say if he puts tires on it, buy it (tires will run you $500-$1000 depending on how nice you want) so you are at $8200 which is too much for a 97.

Great suggestions! Wouldn't have thought about ebay.

KBB says its worth just over $7500 in excellent condition, and a little over $6800 for good condition. I'd say the truck is somewhere in between. Edmunds TMV has it at $6900 (outstanding) and $5900 (clean).

I'd purposed in my mind that I'd go as high as $6500. I've since offered him $6800 for it. He's countered w/$7000. I've been checking on tire pricing - and what I want ranges from $630 for 265/70/16, to $828 for 265/75/16, OTD. That puts me between $7430 - $7628 into the vehicle right away.

So, guess I'll tell him I'll sit on the $6800 (which as I see now, is probably too much). Should have asked this question yesterday!

Nice, I bet something like that around this area would go for $8500-$10000. Be sure to post some pictures up for us if you can!

Absolutely. I'll probably wait and post when I get some tires on it...week or so.

First of all congrats on the new 4Runner, you will love it. I also wanted to make a comment about the 265/70 vs. 265/75 tire choice. I noticed this in the 4Wheelparts catalog, the BFG T/A KO's in 265/70R16 are selling for $200.99 right now, and the 265/75R16 are selling for $188.99 per tire. Shouldn't the 265/75's be more expensive??

In any case, you might be able to find 265/75's for the same price or maybe a little less than 70's. I've pretty much decided on BFG's in 265/75.

That is interesting. DT has the 265/75 for $176 each for their installed price. I believe it was $117 from them to just buy the tire online.

Not sure what I'm gonna go with. Doing my homework right now.

That's a good price from Discount Tire for the 265/75's, and that includes mounting/balancing, free rotations, etc. I've purchased tires from them before and aside from the occasional scratched wheel they aren't bad.

265/75/16's are generally LESS expensive in my experience. That is because more trucks use that size than the 70-series, which means more tires are produced, which means more surplus of tires, which means demand.....well, you get the point.

I'd opt for the 75-series, if I were you. Plus, you get more choices in the 75-series tires. Look at Bridgestone REVO's and Nitto Terra Grapplers. Those are the two that I'm looking at for the next set of tires.

We'll I picked it up a couple of hours ago. Seller was a genuinely good guy. As mentioned, he's the original owner and obviously took very good care of the vehicle. I could tell he hated to see it go, and told him it'd be in good hands . Have all maintenance up to date and records for everything including original dealer documents. Perdy cool.

Looks like the only things needed at the moment is a re-stitch on the driver seat panel (quoted about $90 for the repair), and new tires (soon). I'm going to def go with 265/75/16 in something. I'm leaning toward the Kumho ATKL78, and the price is right. I can get a set for $537.22 OTD which includes lifetime balancing and rotation. Also like the Nittos. Still looking...

Anyway, on to the pics!

Gotta love them Hella fog lights!

Get something to cover them and keep them from getting cracked. They are a PITA to find when they break!
