I've been thinking about adding rear heat and a/c to my 1995 4Runner- the vent and controls found on the back of some center consoles. I would look for the center console with controls at a junkyard. I searched Yotatech, and found a thread that states the following:

"It's a fairly intense job. You need to get a hold of the heater that goes under the seat...run the a/c/water lines to/from engine bay. Need new centerconsole and must cut hole in floor under passenger seat. That's pretty much where I decided it wasnt worth it."

Question: Why must a new heater be installed under the seat and a hole for lines be cut in the floor? I know little about A/C and heater cores, but I don't see why simple tubing (possibly insulated) couldn't be run under/inside the plastic around the shifter and center console, tying the front a/c/heater in-dash "channels" to the center console vents. I imagine the tubing couldn't be very large in diameter due to the limited space under/within the console. Perhaps the tubing could be placed along the door thresholds and run under the front seats to the center console. If possible, factory-cut, rubber-plugged floorboard holes could allow a 1.5 to 2.0 inch tube to be run from the front a/c-heater in-dash channels, along the undercarraige and back up through another floorboard hole to the center console. I'm sure the tubing would alter the temperature of some of the heated or cooled air passing through it, but would it be so much as to negate the benefits of rear a/c and heat?

The sight of tubing running along the door threshold may be too much to put up with now that I try to visualize it, but it's a possible alternative.

I have a console with a heater core and blower from a 90 4Runner 3.0L. I also still have the factory hardlines that ran under the floorboard.

I believe the factory console doesn't have AC in the rear, just heat. Mine only has heat.

you are correct robinhood, only heat. the hard lines come off of the heater core lines in the engine compartment, much easier to plumb in from there than trying to tear the dash apart and run them inside. not to mention they would get pretty hot and could damage interior parts.

Yeah, mine only has rear heat. The front AC on mine was so cold, I don't think I would have needed rear AC. My front heater works really good too, so I don't even use the rear heat.

There may be a possibility that the holes are already in the floor for the rear heater lines. Not sure, but that would make more sense from a production standpoint.
