ABS Light, Worst Case Scenario (Cost-Wise)?

Looking at a 99 SR5 with locking rear diff and 175k. Only thing wrong, at first glance, is ABS light is on. Assuming I test drive it tonight and 4wd works, no grinding, whining from diff or tranny, etc. what's worst case scenario (most it could cost me) for fixing the ABS light situation? Yes, I know I could just rip out ABS-related stuff, but let's assume we need to keep functioning, since it's there and hopefully intact.

I've done some searching and reading here and only came up with one thread where someone had to have hub and bearings work done, but looked like he had some issues with his 4wd beforehand.

Any input would be much appreciated.

btw... you people are sick.

You don't want to know the worst-case, because "worst case" is everything ABS-related has to be replaced and it will cost in the range of $3,000+...

Realistically though, it's probably a problem with one of your wheel sensors, and might cost in the range of $500 if you get a shop to replace it. The problem comes with part creep, because if you're replacing a wheel sensor, you might as well replace this part and that part and that part...

You should read the code and see what it says, that will give you a better idea of what you're in for.

Thanks!
You're right, didn't really want to know REAL worst case - just REALISTIC worst case.

Well, after adding that to my list of "probably-gonna-cost-me's" (hoses, belts, radiator to try and preempt the milkshake, etc) I'm thinking this one just isn't going to pencil out. Not with that mileage.

Oh well, plenty of fish in the craigslist... err, ya know.

Anyway thanks a lot.

Best case scenario... pull the ABS fuse out and drive it without that nasty ABS! I hated the ABS on my '98, pulled the fuse years ago and I love being in control of my vehicle. You may want to pull the ABS bulb out of your dash too.
