99 limited 5-speed swap

I researched this a while and can't come to a clear answer from all the threads. I have a 99 limited 4wd auto with the multi-mode transfercase. I want to swap in a 5-speed trans. From what i read , I can keep my current ecu and have no problems with the transfer case function , odometer, abs, or engine, but will get a code due to no auto trans feedback. If i switch to a ecu from a manual, it is uncertain if it controls the transfer case and i may lose the multi-mode, abs, and odometer, and still have a check engine light?
I am in sc , no smog/inspection. Would i be ok to do this swap with my auto ecu and deal with the check engine light. It seems that was everyone's concern from what i read was b/c of smog and inspections. Then all i would need is the 5-speed trans, shifter, shifter trim, clutch pedal assembly, interior trim, slave cylinder, and possible resized driveshafts due to transmission length differences?

Also why will the neutral trick not work?the ecu thinking the auto trans is in neutral, engine just reving? is it the speed sensor? The vehicle showing speed while being supposedly in neutral? But if i am going 60mph and switch into neutral, i do not get a cel....

Sounds like a very interesting swap project. You may have already thought of this but, I would try to do is see if Toyota made any 5 speed manual 4runners that also have the same accessories as you described such as the multi mode transfer case and ABS, if they did then getting the ECU for that particular vehicle would make it a clean swap once you have all the components swapped out. Not too familiar with the multimode transfer case and it may only come on 4runners with the automatic tranny. if thats the case then you may also have to find the companion transfer case from the donor truck you are getting the tranny from, along with all the other parts you need. Seems like there should be some way to do it. Just becuase you don't have the emissions control inspections doesn't necessarily mean the truck does not have the emission controls installed. Something to look at. Best of luck!

Anyone one know what the auto tranny feedback to the ECU is? Would this be hard to spoof?

Pardon my ignorance of how this stuff works, but the ECU determines the shift points right? I don't think you would be able to spoof it easily.

I just picked up a 99 limited 4runner with bad auto tranny. I have the option of picking up a 96 3.4 v6 5 speed tacoma for 500$(guy needed bed and some other things from it). I've really been searching this also.

I did the auto to manual on my 86 trail rig. was a pice of cake, jumped 2 wires together and thats all tha needed...

But the 99 limited I've read that you'll need the whole wiring harness and ecu, ect..... But whether they know this for a fact or not i'm not sure. Not many people have completed this swap. I believe there may be one person on www.toyota-4runner.org that has completed this.

It is possible to swap the tranny with the original auto ecu. you do not need the manual ecu, just trick it into thinking its in neutral.

Maybe this thread will help you:

It doesnt get any better than that. But I just want to get my truck on the road, so i'm just forking over the dough at a local salvage yard for a A340F. Less hassle at this point for me. But good to know that theres a couple out there who have done it.

It's the multimode that makes things tricky. It has its own ECU, but who knows how that is linked into the auto ECU. The odometer is another issue as you mentioned; pretty sure ABS plays a big role instead of the tacoma's simple VSS sensors. Mechanically speaking, the multimode transfercase will bolt up to the 5speed just fine.

If you look up my name relating to this swap you'll find some more info. I eventually lost interest due to smog regulations here in CA and 99+ 3rd gens aren't as simple as tacomas for the swap.

all you do is ground the wire for the neutral on the park/neutral switch connector and throw a 5 speed in. As for the 4wd ecu it just gets info from the ECU. Worst case is you will loose the AWD function. You could put your trans in nuetral while going down a street, hit the 4wd button and see what happens.
