'99 - hitch compatibility
Hello all,
I just picked up a '99 that has the standard OEM hitch on the back. I hate the way it sticks down below the bumper and was wondering if anyone knew if it could be swapped out for the Reese brand hitch that seems to come standard on other models.
Thanks in advance for any help!!
Picture on left is current setup, picture on right is what I'd like to swap to.

If the stock hitch is a 3 piece, you can unbolt and flip the center section upside down and trim out a little section of the bumper. I know the earlier 4Runners had the 3 piece, but at some point they switched to a one piece hitch.

02 Limited, do you have a picture of your truck from the rear? Would like to see how it looks from the same angle I posted above.
Thanks to others for the quick responses. I like how the Reese hitch sits flush to the bottom of the rear bumper. I have searched around and it seems like some of the 99 limited models came with the Reese.

These are the only decent ones I have on my computer right now. They are like a year old but I've had the hitch since about 2005. After I wash my truck tomorrow I'll get some more recent pics up.

02LIM - thanks for the pictures. Looks like that is a good option. I don't like it **quite** as much as the Reese unit, but it looks way better than the OEM style mine came with.
My family is going to pick up the truck tomorrow afternoon, then I'll be seeing it for the first time next weekend. Can't wait!

Yeah I mean it's a little more rounded off and "soft" looking compared to most other hitches, but I mean it does what I ask it to do well (usually just pulling people out or ditches when it snows or occasionally towing my 4 wheelers. Or for using my BVG rack.
