Hello everybody!!
I just finished the coversion of my 1997 console to the 1999 console with a cupholder. What a task that was. Drilling the holes almost killed me!

The only problem I ran into was my e-brake handle rubbing a bit.

This mod only cost me $48.67 at a wrecking yard/ part recycler in Rancho Cordorva, CA. Quite a bit cheaper than $200+ from the dealer!

I recommend this mod to all of you 96-98 runna' owners out there!

wow, I was under the impression that it would cost a lot more! Thinking about doin the conversion too now....

Nice!! I did the same thing! I love those cupholders!! It is one of the best mods I have done!

Dub, does your 4Runner have the rear heater? If not, I have a shell for sale, PM me with an offer. There is only three additional parts you would need to buy from toyota. Let me know!

welcome to the club. i think you're #5 now.

the #4 guy got all the parts including the 99 ebrake handle and the silver bracket for free. this significantly cut down the work needed to do this mod. that is, it was just a matter of swapping the parts and did not require any drilling. i need to edit that into the writeup.

Wow..im an idiot..I never thought of looking for the acutally 99+ parts! That would have cost me 20 bucks I bet, and saved me a HUGE hassle!:pat:

Also, that silver bracket didn't like fitting under the rear heater!

travis encountered some issues re rear heater. im sure he'll chime in. i need to get his input about that too and add it to the write up.

So you can just buy all the 99+ parts and do a swap w/out drilling? Just bolt on? That would be awesome. I would really consider doing it.

according to one of the guys who was writing me about this mod, the answer is yes. no drilling, nothing. just bolt off, bolt on. but you still ahve to make some dremel cuts.

Thanks Bob, this is good news. I don't mind cutting the console to fit. I just really didn't feel like relocating the e-brake by drilling holes.

I haven't done the mod yet because of the weather and the fact I don't have a garage, but I got a complete 99 style console off ebay for $50. Of course it cost about $25 to ship, but I still saved quite a bit of cash. Now I just need a nice day. Now that I think about it, i need to put the confed spacers I've had for 5 months on as well. If anyone wants to help, don't be afraid to say so.

Is the typical price for a console about $50?
If so, I will be picking one up right away!

Expect to pay between $50 and $100 for all the 99 parts---or so I've heard.

I just called my junkyard, and they said I could pickup the e-brake assembly and handle for $10 bucks, silver bracket for free, and the console I got was $45. For about $60 bucks, you would have a no drill ez solution!

I was considering this mod but if I recall the new console has no home for the switches. I got the rear window, ECT, rs3000 alarm mic, and aux reverse lights. With having 2 of the dash knockouts taken for fogs and driving I'm short by 2. I guess I'll either go thirsty or take my chances Anybody run into this?

Did you keep the rear bracket connected to the heating duct?

If so then you could do one of two things:

-Remove the bolt to the rear heater duct and leave it out. (the rear heater assembly is still sturdy).
-Remove the bolt and make a bracket.

Other than that, the metal bracket should have fit, no problem.

I'm going to dremmel me some holes on the side of the new console so Ican keep my rear window and aux foglights on there. The factory fogs will stay in the dash, but I might try to put the ect up there with it. At this point thought, this is just a tentative plan.

there is hardly any clearance between the walls of the cupholder and the inside cargo box (compartment). im 99.5% sure it wont work

The best suggestion i have is to put some sort of a plate in the small front pocket or fiberglass a plate there.

i have an extra cupholder part and that is exactly what i'm going to try as my first fiberglass project. maybe one of you will buy it if it works out.

Hmm, indeed. That probably would be a good ideat. Maybe an unused piece of a wood trim kit could be used to cover it. and put the switches in that, kind of classy like. If anyone has some wood trim lying around. I'm about to call a junkyard right now for an ebrake. am I correct that any 99-2002 ebrake will work? And I need the handle, mount, and silver piece right? thanks
