I recently purchased a 98 Tacoma X-cab 4X4 w/ 2.7L to replace my aging 91 P/U (I'm still feeling the pangs of guilt). Anyway, the exhaust manifold on my new truck is cracked and I did not discover this until a couple of days after I got it home. I called the used car dealer that I purchased the truck from and he quickly and enthusiastically agreed to make the repairs at no cost to me (much to my surprise, cause I was making preps for a pissing contest with the guy).

The only problem that I have is that the guy is a full-time firefighter and runs the dealership part-time so he will not be able fix the truck until next week (in all fairness, this is also due in part to my schedule). I am thinking about suggesting to the dealer that if he purchase the new manifold and all necessary gaskets, heat shield and associated hardware, I will do it myself. Looking at my Haynes manual, it seems like a fairly straightforward repair and I have done it on my wife's 94 Corolla twice.

I was hoping to get some advice form anyone who has done this on their truck. Is it as easy as it looks????

screw that! let him do it. have you ever had to deal with exhaust bolts? up here in New England, the heads are almost non-existent after all the salt they use.

The bolts on mine look like they are in great shape.

Still hose the bolts with a can of break way and let it soak for a while.

get the cost of parts and 4 hrs labor from him, and get ya a set of headers.

I say let him do it. The main reason is that if it is installed wrong or there is a problem later, you can bring it back to him. If you install it wrong, or there is an issue later, he will probably tell you that he can't guarantee the install and then you are stuck with it like that. The only way I would do it yourself is if he wants to replace it with stock and you want an aftermarket header. In that case, get the money plus labor and buy a header and install it yourself.
