Problem:
I am having trouble with my transmission or torque converter. The reverse is somewhat locked up but it will go when gassed long and hard. Same thing with Low gear. The other thing mentionable is that the 4runner will go when in drive but has very little power(engine seems fine in park). Before it locked up, it was making a whining noise but everything still worked.

Question:
1. Does it sound like the transmission, torque converter or both?
2. Trying to find an used transmission so will a v6 automatic transmission work in a 4 cylinder? Not having much luck finding any compatibility info on transmissions other that one thread saying no for a v6 89 4runner trying to put in a 4 cyl.

i dont think they bolt up? if they do i would be very surprised, i know if you go v6 (if for some wierd reason it does bolt up and work, you will need a v-6 t-case to.

Thanks for the info. Any idea if the torque converter would be bad if no reverse or low? Or would it be mainly the transmission? Just wondering if I would be ok in buying just the tranny and no other parts.
