'98 4runner tranny slip

My 98' 3.4L 4x4 with 200K is hesitating the down shift when approaching a hill. Only when moving at 40-60 mph range and I feel a clunk or two before it shifts down a gear. Fluid is cleanish but seems to be overfilled. reads past the hot mark on the dipstick when cool. any thoughts?

I would drain some fluid out and get it to the correct fill level before digging any further. Autos are pretty sensitive to fluid level and type. Also make sure you use the correct type of fluid.
