97 Needs Remote Door Locks/Security

This base model 97 4Runner came with power door locks but does not have security or remotes.
What is the easiest path to get the remotes. I do not trust the shops and can do it myself. Would a transplant from another 4Runner be "plug and play"? Or should i just go ahead and get an aftermarket setup and dig into the wiring?
Do these 4Runners need special parts for these kits?

Thanks for any help you can tell me!

Mike

aftermarket is going to be the easiest to source. average install time (depending on options) in these trucks is about half hour. probably one of the easier vehicles to do them in.

make sure you get something from a reliable source, as the no name brands are hard to get parts for, and in my experience they dont really last to long.

if you need any wiring info, let me know and I would be glad to help ya.

Thanks for the assist!
I read 4 hours to install before in research on here, but wondered.

So, manufacturer like the Commando would be a good one?
Thanks so much!

I personally like the offerings from DEI.

out of all of them that I've ever installed, they are the easiest and I dont see many of them come back for problems. they have been around a while, and the brain has a lifetime warranty.

Are 4runners really not pre wired for factory alarms? Seems like most vehicles are...but now that I think about it, I never saw a place for a stock unit to plug in on my runner.

Pre-wired or plug and play with the right cables?

i went to the strealer, they were of little help. They felt fairly certain that the cables were not there, but could not ansewer whether adding the unit and cables, would the cable have a slot to plug in.

Anyone actually add a oem system to a 4runner that came w/o a system?

Thanks

in the 90s, toyota do not exactlyl have OEM keyless entry and security, they were installed by a third party. most wires were tapped into, except for ignition harness.

you dont want OEM system, theyre limited in range.

work good from my experience, that is one of the names DEI markets under, also clifford, python, and rattler. they also sell under the valet name, but its usually only keyless entry and some accessories, no alarms.
