'97 Limited locked me out

'97 Limited locked me out
I have five 4runners in my family, including a '97 Limited and an '01 Limited. I've never driven any other car but a 4Runner, but they've all been SR5s. I'm having a hard time keeping the differences straight when it comes to the keys and starting the cars.
The '97 Limited has locked me out once when the engine was running, and it did it to my mechanic as well when it was having an oil change. My first 4Runner was a '96 SR5 and whenever I had the key in the ignition and I closed the door the locks would all immediately go up so it was impossible to lock yourself out. However, in the '97 Limited the locks go down when you get in the car and put your seatbelt on, and also when you turn the car off the locks go up. At least I think, I may have this backwards because I don't drive it very often (it's my dad's second car). This is the only 4Runner out of all the ones I've ever driven ('94 SR5, '95 SR5, '96 SR5, '97 Limited, '01 Limited, '02 Sport) that locks and unlocks the car for you. Is there a reason for this, and can it be disconnected? Also, is it common to be locked out by a Limited? My dad has had this car since July '06, and it did it for the first time about two months ago. It has only done it a total of two times.
Another recent problem is that when my mom goes to start my '01, the car doesn't start. I have four keys with the microchip in them, and she has tried three different keys. On two different occasions, the car wouldn't start for her, but when I went out it started right up for me. Are both of these problems just signs of the age of the security systems of the two cars?

Most likely this is a function of your alarm system. If it is an aftermarket system, you could probably defeat this function. The way mine works, when the trans is in Park, it will unlock if the doors are opened & closed. There maybe a loose connection somewhere. You might take it to an alarm installer & ask them.
