Greetings all...

Sorry if this question has been asked and answered a thousand times, but I've searched til my head hurts and can't find a good solution.

Have a 97 4Runner with 205k and runs like a champ! EXCEPT lately when I hit speeds of 55mph+ I get this nasty loud grinding/drone/vibration from the bottom/rear end with even the slightest touch of the accelerator. When I let off the gas, no noise, no vibration... perfect ride.

U-joints maybe? Rear diff? I'd appreciate any thoughts.

Have you checked the u-joints?
Get underneath and grab the d-shaft (near the u-joint) and see
if there is any play.
They could be dry. When did you last lube them?

I would suspect the u-joints first. Mine made a similar noise, I took the shaft to a driveline shop to have it balanced and they also replaced the joints. They also had to repair the slip yoke as the holes were egged out causing it to wobble. That was a year ago and it's still good!
