96 Tacoma Alternator Problem

Alright guys have a quick question for you guys. Me and my buddy went out four wheeling last night. He drives a 96 tacoma with a 2.7 in it and the two first little bumbs he hit the motor died. It would start back up but as soon as you turn the headlights on it would die again. So i figured it would be a Alternator problem. So luckly i was in my 88 3.0 V6 and i towed him back to our house like 30 miles. But anyways we checked all the connections and ground and everything had power. So today we took the alternator off of it and took it down to the parts store and they checked and it checked out fine. But my deal is they couldnt tell me how many amps it was pushing out. So it might have passed the test but maybe its only pushing out 20 Amps. So if anybody has some things to check that would be great. And also once we got back to the house i through the battery on the charger and it was below 40%.

Thanks

Kevin

Its possible you may have a bad cell in your battery as well

I would be looking at loose connections, as well as alternator and battery.

Sounds to me like a dead cell in the battery. Take the truck to autozone or schucks and have them run an electrical system check.

not saying it couldnt be a bad battery but it is a brand new red top optima battery. But still good point im going to do a load test on it tommorow at work and see what happens. But like i said its got power and i traced all the wires back and everything looks good. But im still leaning towards an alternator just because it passed a test they still dont tell me how many amps it is pushing out cause they cant test it under a load.

Without looking in a wiring diagram I'd suspect a short

alright guys i got a new alternator for that tacoma and it still did the same thing. So i started checking wires. It was negative ground that attaches to the body which was broken. Once i put on a new eye lit it worked flawless. Thanks guys for all the help
