'96-'98 front bumper fitting a 2001 4Runner

I've done some searching for this and found that you can fit a 2001 front bumper to a '96-98, but not the other way around. Has anyone tried? Thanks.

no offense to the 96-98 folks, but why on earth would you want to do that for?

Well, mainly, because I think the 2001 bumper doesn't look as good as the eariler 3rd gens.

You may be one of the few b/c as your research has shown, people would rather upgrade to the newer bumper than upgrade to the older version. Having said this, it's probably not a direct bolt-on. I tried getting the 96-98 rear bumper (I know this is different but...) to fit on my 99 and it wouldn't bolt on. Good luck to you.
