I'd like to find out if the 96-98 4runner limited headlights turn off after the engine was turned off, key removed and the drivers door was opened - without hitting the switch. Can someone verify for me?

My 95 limited did. My 96 SR5 does not. The 99 SR5 and Limited does.

If they do I'd like to find out what relay makes this happen and see if I can swap it into mine.

So if you're driving with the lights on, switched turned on, and you stop driving and do not turn the headlights off you want to know if the lights automatically turn off? No, they'll stay on. I have a 96 Ltd. and if I turn the lights on they stay on until I turn them off.

My 98 limited headlights do not go off unless you turn them off no matter what(unless the battery dies, of course!). Hope that helps!

Thanks guys. Looks like Toyota took it off for the 96-98 models but brought it back for 99. It just struck me as a bit odd. I got in the habit of leaving my parking lights or head lights on in my 95 - looks like that is on I'll have to break.

My 98 makes an annoying sound if my lights are on when I open my door. Now that I think about it I'm not sure if thats when the key is in or out/or both???

I just ran out and checked....It makes the noise if the lights are on and the key is out, then open the door=annoying alarm sound.

-So if you leave the lights on
-turn the car off as you would if you were getting out
-take the keys out of the ignition
-open the door and you get reminded the lights are on.
