'96 4runner & Utility Trailer/brake wiring dilemma
Problem: My flatbed utility trailer's right brake light doesn't function and shuts off my right turn signal when brake is applied...
-- L/R running lights and left brake/turn signals always work fine--
Does anyone know how to rewire or use some sort of connector to make my trailer light work properly. I have tried this trailer on a truck w/out amber turn signals and the lights worked error free.
I've seen quite a few modules and other connectors but didn't want to waste money or time before asking all you guys.
Thanks for the help

you can get a connector from an auto store cheap....the way it should work if its a 4 pin connector...is if you press the brake it will light up the same lights that are also the turn signals....if you turn on the head lights another set of lights should light up thats on the trailer (you need 4 bulbs in the trailor)...so if you hit the breaks and then turn of a turn signal, one stays on and the other flashes....
What I'd do is check all the wiring (take a volt meter too it and ohm all the wires out checking for shorts or crossed wires)....check all the bulbs too since it can get screwy if a bulb goes out...but first take a voltmeter to the plug...the first wire should be a ground (the exposed one) the second one should only have power when the headlights/amber lights are on, the 3rd and 4th should be brake/turn signals...turn on the flashers and make sure the voltage is going up and down on both...then have someone press the brakes and make sure they are both getting power.....if all that checks out then you know its a problem in the trailor....

I had the same problem with my '99last spring, and with my old '91 three years ago. It turned out to be a box behind the LR cargo panel. The box combines the "split" blinker/brake signal down into the standard 4 plug adapter. When they fail they cause weird feedback and funky things to happen with your lights when a trailer is plugged in. I bought a generic replacement kit (not OEM) from a local auto parts store and spliced it into place.
Good luck!

For some reason it's not lighting up when you brake, but stays on with the parking lights. I can't remember how it used to work.
