96 4runner 15mpg? what are you getting to the tank?
hey all. just bought a 96 4runner SR5 2WD V6 with 145k about a week ago. i've gone thru 2 tank fulls.
first time i filled up at 180 miles to 11 gallons (16.25 mpg)
then today i filled up 205 miles to 13.5 gallons (15.2 mpg)
after the first tank, i cleaned the throttle body, maf, put seafoam in the tank. it ran smoother. but my mpg is still bad. actually got worse. i drove about 70% freeway at 65-70 miles per hour.
is this normal?
i see other threads where ppl are getting 18-20 mpg.
what is the normal amount of miles driven to the tank fillup that you guys are getting?
thanks for any input
edit: it's all stock, no mods, 225 70 15 tires. 35 psi all around. it's auto 2wd

oh sorry, it's all stock 225 70 15 tires. 35 psi all around. it's auto and 2wd. i'm editing the original post with this info.
i donno if it has had a tuneup. i just bought it from a dealer. it has had a new timing belt installed at 130. so i'm assuming the previous owner did do maintinance on it.

yea regardless of if a dealer had it, i would at least, do plugs, oil, filter, fuel filter, air filter, etc....
my mom has a 99' 2wd limited 4runner with the 3.4, auto and with 267/75/16's i believe she gets between 18-20mpg city.

thanks all. yes rubbing in the 22mpg makes me feel better...................NOT. hahha i wish i could get that. our cars only weight 3500 lb's for the 2wd v6. so atleast 18 should be possible for a 3.4.
i stay under 2500 rpm in city. usually 2200 at shifting (auto box)
idle is like 600-700 or so with a/c off. jumps up 100 rpm or so with a/c on
yea i'm gonna do plugs and fuel filter next. airfilter seems recently changed. and i'll do an oil change this weekend.
think maybe it's the O2's? which ones usually get slow and give bad mpg?
thank you all

I have the same specs(my tires are around 31 psi) and I get 18.5 mpg usually from 50/50 driving. Straight highway driving I can usually get 22-23 mpg. Only "mod" is a removed airbox elbow.

i'll be happy with 18. i'm gonna do some mods on the airbax. the deck plate and maybe elbow. i don't wanna make it loud so i'm gonna stick with stock exhaust.
anyone know if should i change the front or rear o2 for gas mileage?
thanks

I get anywhere from 18-20.5mpg in my 99' 4runner 4wd ltd v6 auto (heaviest slowest one they made) with 265/75/16's (bigger than stock).
Yes, there is something wrong with yours.

I have a 96 V6 4WD limited, 125,000 miles. (I got mine about 3 months ago) I get around 17 mpg. I read a thread where people had good results from changing the fuel filter, I'm going to do mine tonight. Things that adversely affect mpg: Bad O2 sensor, dirty fuel filter, air filter, plugs, wires, pcv, etc.
Good luck,
Paul

I've noticed (i have over 155,000miles on mine) (i run mobil 1) that when i get over 5000miles to an oil change, my mpg goes down 2mpg. right back up when i change the oil....
