95 4runner help please

about oil......does anyone know how much oil a 3.0L v6 engine would hold? Also i drove my 4runner to 3600 miles without checking the oil or anything, should i still have some oil? The reason why i ask this is because yesterday i was pulling out of my driveway and i heard a noise so i checked the oil and there was no oil. I got my oil changed 3 months (3600 miles) ago. Is it normal for a 95 4runner to have no oil after 3600 miles or is there a leak? The sad story is im going to have to come up with some money to get a new engine. Thanks for your comments

Oil capacity is 4.8qts. My 95 never used a drop until I blew a head gasket.

Sam

so do you think something else caused my oil to leak like a head gasket?

I sure hope It's not your head gasket. I think I'd start with the basics and check that the drain plug and oil filter are tight.

As far as the head gasket remove the oil dip stick and the cap on the driver side valve cover and check if there is any sign of oil and water mixing i.e. a thickish yellowish milky substance. Also check the radiator for fluid loss and let us know.

Good Point! I got a brand new engine back when I had 55k from just such a screw up, but if you had no oil your engine would have seized a long time ago.

Your right. The valves started seizing after about 10 miles.

You notice a HUGE pool of oil under your truck when you park? Or does it smoke like crazy when you start it? Your engine is obviously consuming a LOT of oil..be aware of it.

BTW...my 3.4 doesn't consume a DROP of oil, even after 179k miles!

nothing is wrong with my engine that i can see, i just couldnt believe only after 600 miles of going over 3000 miles that it ate up all my oil. I dont want to put 2000 dollars towards a new motor when it could of been the people who put my oil in.

I don't think you could have gone 3600 miles without oil....When the dipstick is dry, isn't there still a bit of oil left?

Like I asked before, do you notice any leaks at all? Smoke?

There is still a fair amount of oil in it if the level is just below the dip stick. If I were you I would change the oil myself and watch it closely. Check the dip stick every day or two. And keep an eye out for leaks. By taking it to one of those quickie lube places you are really taking a risk (I wouldn't trust most of those retards with a plastic bag, let alone my truck!). An oil change is one of the most simple things you can do on your own.

the place i got my oil change was from my dads shop. But i still dont trust them because i still think something they messed up something. I just dont see how i could have gone 3600 miles and it made a noise and i took it to the shop and they are telling me i need a new engine because i ran it without any oil. I just dont see how 4.8 quarts or however many quarts were in there was used during those 3600 miles and they are telling me that its normal for a 95 4runner to use that much oil in 3600 miles. They are telling me that it doesnt leak, they are also telling me it wasnt burnt because there isnt any oil on the end of the tailpipe. But they are telling me that its just plain normal for 4runners to use up all of the oil by 3600 and i want to know how accurate this is because i think they messed up somehow and arnt telling me everything i need to know and i know you guys know alot about toyota's and everything. If you have a 95 4runner can you please tell me how far you have gone over 3000 miles without putting more oil in or anything, thanks a bunch.

oh yea..and i dont think it leaks because wherever i parked i never saw an oil spill or leak or anything. I checked at work, my house, almost everywhere i park and i never did see any oil spills. Also when i was driving down the road i was never smoking or anything.

I used to check my oil every 2 or 3,000 miles, but lately I'm getting kinda anal about checking it at least weekly. It didn't burn any oil but it did start leaking somewhere around the 200K mark. The AutoRX treatment seems to have taken care of that. And the crankcase holds about 5.5 quarts, but I usually just throw 6 in at change time.

If you ran it 3,600 miles, then you originally had oil in it. Did the oil change guys screw up? I doubt it...You screwed up. Should've checked the oil at least once in that mileage. I hope, for your sake, that the engine isn't screwed up. It's a hard lesson, but you are responsible for making sure that your 4Runner is in good working order. And that also means checking up on the people you pay to maintain it.

i believe the engine is screwed up, i think they said something about the bearings being bad (whatever that means) so i think i will have to get a new engine, or that is what they are telling me now

MY runner doesnt loose any oil. just changed it yestarday, i put quarts in 5 quarts and filled the bottles back with the old oil and it was almost exactly 5 quarts other than what splatters everywhere when the filter is removed. Do yourself a favor and change your own oil. Its easy and you can use synthetic oil for the cost of the cheap crap quick places use.
