Check Engine Light came on yesterday; first time ever. I pulled the codes myself...7 flashes, 1 flash, then repeat.

Code 71 Which indicates:

EGR VALVE MALFUNCTION--EXHAUST GAS TEMPEATURE BELOW SPEC. FOR EGR CONTROL

--EGR SYSTEM


--EGR GAS TEMPERATURE SENSOR/CIRCUIT

Any ideas what I should be looking for to fix the problem? Haven't found how to reset the CEL either.

Chances are that the temp sensor has lost it's magic smoke. I have an extra on around if you want it cheap it's yours. You should also try testing the sensor first to see if it's in specs(check the manual for the proper specs). Try cleaning the EGR as well as it may be stuck open or closed. May even be the vsv valve. Oh and to clear the code, pull the EFI fuse in the fuse block under the hood for a couple minutes and you should be good to go and won't lose your radio stations.

Is it coincidental that it failed the day after I replaced the battery? Thanks for the offer on the temp sensor...let me check this one out first.

I just replaced that sensor and eliminated that code ($130 at stealership). Too bad I still have the ignition code that I can't figure out.
