'95 2wd Taco rear-end interchangability
Hi all, found this forum and it seems pretty active, which is good because I'm getting no answers out of Toyota.
I inherited a '95 tacoma, 4 cylinder, 5 speed, 2 wheel-drive plane-jane. I think the only "option" installed on it is A/C. Before my family member bought it as a truck to "take to the dump", it was a courier vehicle. She's got a little over 297,000 on the clock and runs like a champ.
The rear-end is HAMMERED though. There's an older non-tacoma version of the same truck ('92 2wd plane-jane toyota) in a nearby junkyard with a rear-end in it. Will this thing work? It's $35 and I'm BROKE! Gotta get this truck fixed before the rear just locks up going down the road and killing me or someone else, and I need to drive it.
I'll give any further needed info I can that I didn't include. The parts desk at the dealership has turned out to be useless.

If the 1992 PreTaco is a 4-cylinder, then yes - its differential should be transplant-able. Both trucks used the so-called '7.5' rear end.
If you're asking about a complete rear end (as in complete axle) transplant ... The PreTaco rear end is narrower than the Tacoma's. A complete PreTaco rear end transplant is sometimes done by minitruckers who need to get more clearance for wider wheels / tires.
