92 4runner question

i have just bought a 92 4runner, its 5spd and i lifted it 3in body, and put 33x12.50's on it, i think it had 4:10 gears but it sucks to drive on the highway, it has no power, like it can't maintain 60 on an uphill, what should i do.. headers/exhast, regear? like 3000 rpms at 65 in 5th gear

Welcome to the forums.

This is common for those who go for the bigger tires.
You are going to need at least 4.88s, and if you had an auto, I'd say 5.29s.

This is one reason I am still running 31" tires, and I am geared for the smaller 235 series.

There are many 2nd gen owners on the forum here with 4.88s and running big tires.

Check out some of Adrian's posts.

He's got dual ARB Air Lockers, 33" tires, and I believe 4.88s.
He can fill you in better on it than I.

I've got 4.88's with 32s. Auto tranny. 70 mph is about 2800rpm I think for me.

I have 5.29's with the auto.

I received and responded to your e-mail.

When the speedo reads 75, I am turning a touch under 3k RPM's, maybe 2900 or 2950.

All the other power stuff will not make enough difference to overcome the gearing deficiency.

A lot would depend on what gears you have now.. With a 5spd, you may have 4:56's if you had the 31" tire package.. Does your spare tire release rod go from the bumper to the left frame rail to a gear box and then to the tire winch?? If so, you will have the 4:56's.. If it goes straight to the tire winch, you have the 4:10's (?) not fully sure with out looking what the non-wide tire ratio was... I say with 33's to go with the 5:29's.. You may pay a little at highway speed, but it will be worth it.. My truck is still running 4:56's with 32" tires and it is driveable, but 4:88's would be sweet.. I think you would be running just like me right now with the 32's if you go with the 4:88's... Heck, if the gears are too high.. Go with some nice 34X9.5 super swampers

Don' t forget that since you added bigger tires your speedo will be off.

So if you are reading 65 straight off your speedo, you may be actually going about 75.

4.88's seem to be the way to go with 33's and a 5sp. You could always go with 5.29's though. If you said your always in 4lo offroad anyways you won't benefit much from the 5.29's vs the 4.88's

Go with the 4.88's... the 5.29's are going to be too much.. Heck, I am turning 3k at 65mph (via GPS) with 32's and 4.56's....

A personal preference observation here:
If you already have 4.56's, the change to 4.88's is really going to be negligible. To make it worth your while, I would either sit on it, or go to 5.29's.

If you plan to run 35's ever, then you are primed.

I thought that 90 and 91 at least maybe 92 also, did not have the 4..56 option, could be wrong though

I am quite pleased with my 5.29's, but I have an auto. I can still go 80 without a problem, but I usually cruise comfortably at 75.

As for the speedo being off, mine does not seem to be with this set-up. I keep up with traffic and have miled things with my bro in stock rigs.
