I have a friend who is looking to lift a '91 2wd pickup. Is there any kits available for this?? I've been looking all night, but I can't find anything listed for the 2wd's...if any of you know of one, and if possible what is involved in installing it, it would be much appreciated.

I believe Fab-Tech has a lift kit for a 1991 2wd pickup. Fab-Tech is sometimes a stiff ride, but with the early 90's 2wd it depends on how you crank the torsion bars. I have a friend with either an '89 or '90(can't remember) with a fab-tech lift. It's a three inch, so its not huge, but it fits nicely. If the truck has been used much for towing, or a lot of hauling, you might consider a whole new leaf package. Putting an add-a-leaf with old sagging leafs will leave the back looking almost stock, and give you quite and extreme pre-runner look. My friend first had the lift on a '84. It had about 250,000 miles, and spent most if its life towing a boat, so it sagged a lot in the back.

He does not tow, or even load it down, it is merely a commuter that he wants to make look a little better I actually might have a hook up with fab tech, I'll give them a call tomorrow. Do you know what is involved in the install by chance? Do they replace the torsions or drop them all together?

i wouldnt recommend fabtech. although they are good, i like downey better. sometimes downey can be played out, but i think their 2wd lift would be better. my friend had a fabtech where the welds broke! prob just a once in a life time error, but still

It probably too late for me to post on this, but come on... The finacnial difference between buying a 2wd with lift and a 4WD of that era is next to nothing.

Lifting the rear 3" would be easy since they are sprung under the axle. Make it spring over and its lifted. Up front I have no clue where to start but I bet it involves extensive (and expensive) steering mods. That alone would make it more economical to get a stock '91 4x4 and go from there.

IMHO lifted 2wd is the definition of oxymoron. It will never be able to follow stock 4WDs. Unless the truck is being given for free forget about it. Lifting it is a waste of money unless its supposed to be a poser show truck. It will end up being all show and no go.

On the other hand, 2wds are great for delivering pizza in fair weather on flat streets. 2 inches of snow and/or ice plus an incline and you are stuck. If you live on an inclined street in a snowy climate, get used to walking home up snowy hills. (my appoligies to all 2wd owners)

Ever seen how small the bearings are on the 2wd's? (Not Pre-runners)

I had a customer with a lift, sure looked odd mechanically. He must of had 31's on it. Anyhow, his problem was with front wheel bearings. Every 20-30k miles he had to buy a new set. I suppose the offset in the rim required to get the tire out enough for clearence put to much load on the bearings. He was definitally not happy. He kept insisting it was a problem with Toyota and not the lift and tires. *shrugs*

I think its a terrible idea.

Sorry I have to argue for 2wd! I got my '97 tacoma, and got a fab-tech lift and 3" body, and it sits at the same height as the stock pre-runner or 4wd. I also found the proper rear spacing for the rims so as not to kill the bearings. (It kills my steering radius, but three-point turns are just as effective as u-turns.) Tires are 265/70/R16 same as trd off-road stock size.(got the tires off a tundra that was getting new swampers and lift.) The main reason I love mine, it had 19,000 miles that my grandpa had put on it, and I got it for 5 grand!! (By the way, I was out trailing with a friend of mine with a Dodge Ram, and he had to be a wimp and switch to four wheel for a few spots he was scared of, and I went through just fine with my tacoma.) So there's why I like lifts on 2wd's.

If you want a kit that works off road look into www.chaosfab.com or www.camburg.com
These will be more expensive than Fabtech or Downey but their kits are proven to work great for allot of off road abuse. I would say that Fabtech and Downey would be fine if you just want it to look cool and drive on the street mostly and just go in the dirt sometimes.

As for the comment on the 2wd bearings, I built and raced a class 7 open Toyota that was based off of a 1983 2wd truck. I built my own a-arms and used the stock spindles, hubs and bearings for a couple of years without any problems at all. (see attached pic) But then later I built completely new suspension in the front with full size spindles, but that's another story.

I am looking into lifting my 2wd because it's factory but rides low like a lowrider for real. And I am 6'4. So it's way ridiculously low
