'90 Rear window relay, why does it beep?

I just put on a '93 tailgate on my '90. The wiring for each harness coming off the gate was identical, though the connector was different. I spliced my connector onto the 93 gate. My other stuff works, lights, etc. But when I push the "down" button on the console the relay clicks. When I push "up" it makes 4 consecutive beeps. Either way I get no sound from the motor, nor when using the key switch in the gate. My console switch works. The lock switch works. I pulled the relay apart last night and a trace on the board by connector pins 9 & 10 was burned away. I soldering in a jumper wire and it allowed the window to go down with the console switch, but not back up. Then it started the clicking while pressing "down", beeping while pressing "up" again. The key switch still didn't work. I did the 'power to the motor' test at the harness through pins 5 & 13 and the window went up and down fine. I think the relay is bad. But I'm curious why it beeps when I press "up" and what it's trying to tell me. Anyone have any ideas and would you say too that it's the relay that's bad?
Thanks guys!

last time i had my gate apart to fix the defroster connections, the beeping was to warn me that the gate was open and trying to raise the glass. try engaging the catcher on either side of the gate then operate the up/down switch. make sure you have someone ready to support the glass as it extends from the gate, you dont want it to break or otherwise damage the top of the gate.

By catcher, do you mean the latch on each side that hits the striker (the loop attached to the body) when it closes and holds the gate closed?
I might have to look at/test the other switches inside the gate that tell the ecu it's closed, because it closes fine. Hmm. Maybe a direct switch may be in order...

iirc, the tailgate beeps when the door is open and you attempt to close the window.....

i would venture a guess and say that some sensor is indicating that the door is open.... there are a couple plugs on each side that can be disconnected to test.... they will not disable power to the motor.... unplug the sensons and try to see if you can isolate which one is hindering the motor from operating....

oh and make sure that the rear wiper is properly seated in the rest position.... this will also prevent the window from rising and cause the beeps...

good luck

No rear wiper on mine.
But get this, I go back out to try the test Lee mentioned, with the gate open, I closed both catches, turned the key on and hit the up button. Window goes up a bit. I stopped so it wouldn't come out. Put the window back down. Reset the catches, closed the gate, hit the up button. Window goes all the way up. Tried a few more times up and down. Works great now. Started the truck and tried a few times. Works great. Bolt everything back together, put interior panels in. Close gate. Start truck. Operate window up and down 3-4 times. Works great. I have no idea what happened. Maybe a stuck switch because the gate had been sitting since last March. I will definitely be keeping my eye on it. Thanks guys for your ideas and suggestions!

Cool Mike, you got the gate on! I drove by last night after picking up the girls. Trucks's looking great. Almost there! It's supposed to go up to 42 tomorrow, so I'm going to Pick-N-Pull with Dale. Gotta pick up the new tank & bracket. I'm gonna look for some side markers from a VW or Saab while I'm there, as well as anything else I can scrounge up God, I love that place!
See ya monday.

Thanks Joe! Yeah, it's almost there. Oh what a feeling! Just a couple things left to put back on. The weather's been nice to me a bit so I'm taking advantage of it. Unless I get a wild hair, I'm gonna hold off on the doors for now cause they're just gonna get beat up over the winter. The rest of it will come one thing at a time. Good luck at PNP. Hopefully there'll be one with a good tank there. I'd swap out the whole thing rather than trying to get the bracket out. I wanna see what goodies you bring back with you!

You know, I hadn't even thought of that yet. My old gate had it but it was so shot that the leads came off the window. I should post pics of the old one! I think some people would get a kick out of it. Someone suggested soldering the leads back but I didn't think that was a good idea. I really didn't want to shatter the window. But anyway, I got used to not having it, so it didn't cross my mind. I'm going to check it tonight. I'll post what I find. Hmmm...
