90 22RE acts like choke is on till warms up
Hi guys, I'm new to this forum and have searched the threads looking for this problem. Hope someone can help. Have a 90 pickup with the 22RE engine. Till the temp gauge gets to normal, the engine acts just like the choke is on (the computer is making it run really rich) and if the engine is under load when the magic temp is reached, it's like it (the computer) switches the choke off and it leans out and runs like a top. I'm pretty sure it's one of the sensors, but has anyone else ever had this problem. Engine has 189,000 and the timing chain was replaced at 120,000.
Also, this is OT, but just last week my son was coming home from college and the 22RE grenaded on him. I've never seen anything like it. Looks like #4 piston rod let loose and pretty much exploded the block in the rear area. Rod punched out both sides of the block gashed open the oil pan, and tore the starter off leaving the nose piece still bolted to the block. I'm in the process of rebuilding an engine for this truck and presently have just got the machine work all done. Any pointers on the best place for parts?? This will be my first 22RE complete rebuild so I'll be asking lots of questions. Now that I'm having to build a motor, I might as well fix the 'choke' problem.
Thanks for any help guys!
