882 Woes

Hey all,
My OME lift should be installed Saturday, and i'm a little bit worried. I ordered the 882's with hopes of the 4runner not being lower up front. However, after reading a few posts I'm worried about it providing it too much lift for the CV's without a heavier bumper. Should I just not install the trim packers, and call it good? OR should I get 881's?

BTW, I've broken down and decided to install this myself with a hand from a friend.

honestly, every 4Runner is different. give it a shot, youll never know until you try it out.

I was thinking that. What about the trim packers?

It would only tear the boot right? That's a somewhat cheap and somewhat easy fix, right? Any other damage likely/possible?

Torque? What about that? Anything I need to know?

two much lift will result in your boots rubbing against eachother and possibly tearing them after time. likely though, grease will leak out of your clamps and will cause the need for tighter hose clamps. also, CVs at an angle are more likely to break while handling torque.

I probably wouldn't put in the trim packers, I installed my OME 882 kit last weekend and i haven't measured but it gave me about a good 3". i put on a RB diff drop to settle the cv angles. i'm running a bull bar and love the ride, it is stiffer than stock, but in a good way, the truck no longer feels like a boat through corners, it handles better than before even without the sway bar on. so i'd leave out the trim packers esp without a heavy bumper cause they will just give you a stiffer ride. if you decide you want more height later, add a revtek top-out spacer (i think thats what they're called...) so you don't have to dissamble the coils again cause the 882s are a bitch with a standard screw-type compressor. and i installed the full kit with a couple other guys in a day with time to spare

So it seems that the CV damage wouldn't be immediate considering I drive A LOT on road, and probably will not have time to go off-road until long after the diff drop is installed.

Of course, I didn't order the Diff Drop yet.

I bookmarked the site somwehere.

you dont have to be off-road to damage your CVs. driving with CV angles at a high angle will be enough to do to damage.

...and getting a diff drop wont make a huge difference.

I had 881s up front with the OEM bumper and then went to 882s with an ARB/winch, but did have the 881s on there with the ARB/winch for a day. When I went with the 882s, WHAT A DIFFERENCE! 882s give quite a bit more height. I've got one CV boot that burps a bit every now and then and all the rest seem fine, so I'll just hose clamp that one off in the near future.

Definitely get the diff drop before you ride around a bunch with the 882s.

I'd get the diff drop personally, they're pretty cheap and take all of 10 mins to install, Roger Brown sells some nice ones... diff drop
i think it's worth it to try to slack the angles a bit cause, correct me if i'm wrong, but i believe that a lof of the damage will come from wear and tear from long, high-speed highway trips when the cvs are spinning so fast.

Get the Drop's

My CV boots were getting massively grooved, and that was WITH an ARB bumper and a Winch....

Since I drove to work 1 hour each way everyday, I decided to get the Manual hub kit, to disconnect everything up front, now I dont have to worry as much.

I ordered the diff drop from RB.

Should I send the 882's back? I really really really want to do this Saturday, and sending them back would take an extra two weeks!

BTW, the most likely thing to break is just the BOOTS, right? Unless of course I drive without grease for any time?

What do those puppies cost? Are they hard to install? I might just accept that liability if need be.

All of this of course, IF THE LIFT EVER COMES. It should have been here by now. Mike's looking into it.

I want it installed before I get my 16x8 Tech1's!!!!

the 882s are awesome, they ride so much better than stock, i'd keep em especially if you ever plan on getting another bumper. i couldnt tell you how they ride without it though, but it'll improve handling and give you more lift than the 880s or 881s
