87 turbo 4runner help

Ok well do what you will but I literally have no clue about this truck. Its turboed and has a digital dash. The fuel gauge says its always empty how do I fix that. I am also trying to figure out what gears it has I suspect them to be 4.30 but uncertian on that. I did check 4x4 wire but still not sure. I am planning to make a trip real quick across country and want to tow a trailer. My question is I have a set of 4.88 gears would it be a safe bet to install them and help out with towing and the overall cross country commute? or should I sell it even though I only bought it 2 weeks ago? would the atomatic r150 tranny be strong and reliable enough to tow with. this vehicle has never had a tow hitch on it before so its never been used for towing. if it was a non turbo 4runner I wouldn't be asking these questions but here I feel like I am already walking through a fog.

Thanks

For the gas gauge, I have no idea. I'm working on this problem right now. However, the gears are 4.30's. All automatic turbo's had them. Hope this helps.
