87' EGR ?'s

I've got a 87' 4wd with orginal 2 barrell carb and I want to do away with anything I dont need. The reason is I recently rebuilt motor and carb. reassembly truck in orginal confirguration but no it seems to run like it has a vacuum leak or something. Fuel in sight glass is a little above normal but not enough to hurt. I'm wondering if anyone has completely done away with EGR and anything else that is not needed. Any information would be greatly appreciated and thanks for reading.

not sure if they have emissions testing where you live, but it is a federal offense to remove smog equipment, and if you do have smog testes there, it will not pass the test and may not be allowed to be re-registered...

its still a federal offense to remove emissions equipment.....

that said, you might need to find the egr blockoff plates for the exhuast manifold and also the large unit thats on the rear of the intake side near the firewall... those are the external egr tubes.. there is also some vacuum with them i beleive and you will need to cap those off... i personally would try to fix the problem you are having isntead of trying to remove the egr, as doing so may start to trigger check engine lights and things of that nature.... egr isnt necessarily a super vital part in the operation of the engine, however it was put there for a reason....

I have made the plates for the exhaust and know where all the vacuum lines was just wondering what all electronic's need to be jumped. The only real reason I'm bypassing is I have a 94 cobra that has a bypassed EGR and everything runs and works fine on it plus all of the electronic and EGR parts on my truck are the same ones from the factory. We bought the truck new 87' and only thing every replaced was water pump until about a month when I rebuilt the motor. Truck has 195,000 on it as of yesterday.

since it has a carb, otehr than the physical stuff i dotn think naything needs to e done..... i think... not 100% sure, but i have heard people saying that they disconnect the trucks emission computer and it still runs... mihgt jsut wnat to look into that... honestly, though, i would jsut leave the egr system alone, it will most likely run better if all the passages arent all clogged up with sludge...

The whole EGR systems was clogged at disassembly during motor rebuild so I cleaned up everything the best I could since it was cleaned its having a loading prob. and rough idle like timimg but after swapping some vacuum lines around and capping the EGR stuff runs a lot better but not perfect.

hey nate-
I have been looking into the same thing for my 86 EFI. right now the EGR does not work at all. I get the intermitent (sp) check engine lite but it goes out 10-15 sec after I notice it and come off gas. its possible I have a MAF problem as well some monkey other than me seems to have messed with it an getting the settings right has been a MFer. I don't really care that it is a fed offence. I injected and "Illegally modified" my CJ-5 now I get 16-18 MPG out of my 256cid vs. the old 9-11 MPG. after contacting CARB "calif. air resources board" ld and wondering how saving 5 or 6 MPG could still make my jeep wrong? the responce was the savings were impressive but no tests had been paid for the "changes" I had made therefore I need to put it back to origional or elese.... My take is I'm saving money and using less gas witch has to be better for the enviroment. my consperisy theory mind thinks big money makes cars run slower/less power by putting all the restrictions on said motor costing US more in repairs ( more parts to fix) and making people go to school to learn to fix parts on motors that are not needed in the first place. Oh ya and of course spend more money on more expensive gas because it needs to burn cleaner because the cars have too fine of tollerances. by the way how much more crude oil do we use for this super "clean" all additive fuel than just old school diesel or Leaded????

sorry for the soap box, I'm very interested on how much big brother ˟˟˟˟ I can take off..

I hear ya there since I took all the EGR junk off my cobra I went from 18 - 20 mpg to 25 - 28 imagine that I now get better mpg out off a v8 than I did in my little rice burning car ****ed up huh. Anyway we dont have any laws here in AL against taking it off so its gone. Funny thing is on my cobra all i did was install a resistor across egr regulator check eng light went off added 18 more horses and better gas.
