81 lockouts What works??????????
I need a new set of hubs on my '81. How new can I go? Is there a spline difference? I'm not an extreme off-roader but depend on them to work. Anyone have a set to part with?

the only differences that you will see from '79 to '85 is that '79 and 80(possibly 81) have blue dials on the hubs and say "ASCO" instead of "AISIN". they're really the same, though

Reasons Warn hubs are generally considered inferior to Aisins:
1. Lack of cone washers. The nuts holding the Warns on tend to loosen in time. The result can be sheared studs. BTDT.
2. Cost. A set of Warn cost $140, Aisins run about half of that at the junkyard. BTDT.
3. Aisins are much easier to rebuild/fix. Try buying a replacement spring or cap for a Warn hub, a replacement Aisin part is avaialble from your local dealer. They may not have it in stock but you will have it faster than a comparable Warn part. BTDT.
4. Profile. Warn hubs stick out ~1" further than Aisins. A serious issue on the rocks, less so in mud.
5. Inferior Construction materials/methods. The Warns are made of a lower grade steel and the castings are thinner. End result: grenaded hubs. BTDT.

Is there any where I can get service parts for my AISINS? I would put the money into them if I could. The cam is completely gone on one side. I can get gaskets. Also what is the best lube for the hubs.
I am only a recent member to this site and I must say, you guys are great! I've been a TOYOWNER for over 15 years. I bought a 4 short box in 86 Then traded up for a 90 4 runner Also owning at the same time a 79 and an 81 pickup Then I sold that for a new 95 Chevy Silverado.( BRAIN F@RT!) That lasted 8 months and I went screaming back to toy's and haven't left since. I bought the first rusted-out 87 x-cab I found then moved into a 92 x-cab. I trade that in for a 98 Tacoma then Bought a roll-over 96 4runner. That was going to be for my wife. I couldn't give it up so I traded the 98 Tacoma for a 99 4runner for her. And last winter we moved her into a 01 sequoia. Then 2 months ago I had the chance to get another 81 longbox. But I had to sell my 76 280Z to get it in the house peacefully. (ALL 4X4's)
Thats not all. I have infected my family into TOYO-HOLICS. Dad had a pathinder then I talked him into a 92 landcruiser he then sold his F150 for a 96 T100 Add to that moms 91 then 99
LS400's and dad tipping up to a 99 LX470 and a 2000 Tundra. Then selling his 90 300ZX for a 04 SC430.
I have one brothe that will drive his 95 T100 into the ground (literally) and My nephews and a niece in G3 4Runners And my sister is now in a 03 Seqoia.

Welcome aboard! I think you will find most everyone here is good people. Don't be afraid to ask a question, its always best to use the flashing green button of enlightenment above, but if you can't get results, post away.
Seconding the question about lubrication. And not to jack the thread, but what is the best trick for making sure they don't freeze in winter? I once read about graphite lubricant or spray???

that was kind of my idea there...being able to lock/unlock the rear hubs. i wouldn't mind using the flanges though, since it would could be a pain having as mischevious friends as i do

that should explain what to get. you'll need the hub body, the cover, the guts and all the hardware(cone washers, nuts etc). there's a diagram of all the parts a little ways down
it shows how to rebuild them, which is pretty easy and a good idea before you install them
