7mgte towing power?
Hi,
I'm new to the group and new to Toyotas (just got a very clean '93 extended cab). Concerning engine swaps, I like the idea of the 7mgte with my 5 speed manual tranny, but I haven't found any posts regarding how well this motor would do for towing. Yesterday I towed a 14ft enclosed trailer (moderate weight, mostly aluminum built) with a moderate load, and the truck did fine accelerating 1-3 gears. I just couldn't maintain any higher speeds. I ended up driving the 90 miles in 3rd most of the time at around 5000 rpm. FWIW, there were low sloping hills most of the way plus a head wind, but I just have to have more power.
Any thoughts/opinions?
thanks and take care,

I've done lots and lots of research about these engines, seems to me a 7MGTE would be EXCELLENT for towing. THey make very, very good torque throughout the rpm range!! I would say pull as much as the CHASSIS can withstand as long as your cooling system is up to par.

Wasn't it 4runner4ever that told the story about towing home a donor vehicle for a swap, up a mountain pass, passing fullsize diesel trucks like they were standing still, with his 7mgte truck. Now thats a run on sentence.

Yeah, a turbo charged engine that is otherwise moderately powered will make a great engine.
Lots of engines like to have maintained high load, high rpm trips to keep the turbo spooled so that you are making lots of power.
