7 Gallon Air Tank

I saw a Campbell Hausfeld 7 gallon air tank at Walmart today for about $18. It is similar to the one pictured below. Would this make a good substitute for a Powertank? It says it can be used to air up tires but doesn't mention air tools.

It has a shut off valve and a pressure gauge. Could that be replaced with a different valve that would make using air tools possible? $18 seems really cheap compared to the alternatives.

Also, where could I get it filled up and with what? CO2?

By the way, I stole the picture from this page:

Corner Hardware - Campbell Hausfeld 7 Gallon Air Tank

They want over $40 compared to Walmart's $18...

I think the reason it is cheap is it holds air not liquid CO2.
You can use it for airing up tires and tools but it will run out of air alot quicker.
That is my understanding.

Still, $18 is pretty cheap!

I have an 18 gallon air tank I take with me when I autocross my car. It works fine but I'm not sure how many 32"+ tires you'd be able to fill with it. It's only good for line pressue, 125 psi max...

A normal air tank is not a substitute for a powertank. You cannot fill it with CO2, you can only use an air compressor. Seven gallons will not give you enough volume to run air tools for long and it may or may not be enough to 4 truck size tires.

That tank does not have the right valve for the co2 and you have to have a blow off valve for co2 so when it heats up past a certian temp it will vent the co2 and not blow up like a atomic bomb. 7 gal will only fill 1 33 in tire from 10 psi to 35psi. air tools need cfm and that little tank wont last long proable wont even get 1 lug nut off. That tank would be good if you had some kind of air supple feeding it

Heck now that won't work with CO2, but I hear that it is the new revolution for airing up Revo's. Check your local rock crawling sanctioning body for updates.

You could get one of those and run a little Caddy compressor to it ending up with about $60 total for parts, etc. That would work all right.

I finished my double Caddi air compressor system right before Thanksgiving and I thinking about putting in a small air tank and trying to run air tools. It might be close for the needed CFS and psi, but it might work. Its sure fills up tires well. The presure builds up so fast that I have to release the tire filler before I put it on the valve stem or I can't push hard enough to open it Its pretty sweet, also, there is another thread about a group buy for on board air. I don't think I would go this route but build yourself a custom on board air system. I have mine plumbed out the back so I take my 25 length of hose and a quick disconnect and walk around both side of my rig.

I got mine from early 80's caddi's. I looked at the write up in the tech section to memorize the compressors and looked for big old caddi's at the U-Pull. The one thing you should look for too is compressors with the right mounting bracket.
The first one I bought had been on the wheel well of the caddi, so its bracket was made for that curve, ie. it had diffent level mounting points at all ends so it wouldn't sit flat on its own. I had to make a secondary bracket to fix it. The second one I got had the flat mounting bracket so it was a snap to mount.

These are the two compressors, the one on the right is the one you want to get. The left has my aux bracket before rattle canning

if you have an academy sporting goods store they will fill up co2 tanks for my paintball guns and im sure they would fill up an tank for your rig. If you dont have an academy just look for a store that sells paintball supplies they will most likely have it.
