im trying to figue out why the tranny in my front wheel drive car is doing this: 5th is gone, it acts like neutral. you can also push it into and out of fifth without the clutch, it does nothing. everything else works absolutely perfect.

Simple answer is something is broken. You don't say what kind of car but probably the easiest and cheapest fix is to find one in a junkyard and swap for the used tranny.
