5 speed transmission whine..?? '97 tacoma v6..
Hey everyone...I recently took a 97 tacoma for a test drive that a close friend is thinking about buying..It performs just about flawlessly except for one "potential problem..??" The truck seems to have some sort of transmission whine that seems like it gets louder by the time your into 4th gear as well as being the noisyest in 5th..It can be heard in the the lower gears, but just not as loud....If you push the clutch in the sound goes away all together, and it also seems the "loudest" when de-celling with the truck in 4th/5th gear...Its not really a dry bearing type of sound, almost more of a teapot whine/whistle( just not as high pitched)...Other than that it shifts fine through the gears, but we were just wondering how noisy/whiney these 5 speeds are in general.....Oh, vehicle is a v6,4x4,with 93k on it btw......Thanks for any help/guidence..!!

Hmmm, would a t/o bearing still make noise with the clutch pedal out while in gear cruising?? I talked to a few people local, and a few suggested it may be a imput shaft bearing(s)..?? If thats the case is there any other way to tell if thats what it is w/o dropping the tranny??? Also how long could you get away with a noise like that before something catastrophic happens??

its most likely the thow out bearing. i have this same problem.it only did it a little bit but now it is non stop. when it is not in gear it is loud and twards stoping you can hear the spun bearing. did a clutch and tranny and bearings im my old 89 3.0. soon to do it on my newly found 84

I had the same thing happen when i replaced my Clutch in my Runner. I dont know what caused it, but when i pulled the engine and tranny--there was nothing wrong with it. Was just annoying as hell. And it only did it till i got over about 2000 RPMS. Things i would check however
--Listen to the tranny to see if you hear a pronounced wuuuurrrriiiinnnnggg sound--that is bad
--Listen to the rear end--maybe that is where the sound is coming from--travels up the shaft and sounds like it is coming from the tranny. But considering the way you described it i doubt it is that
