This question just popped into my head, is it OK to shift into 4H from 2WD while moving? I'm pretty sure that going from 4H to 4L is bad while moving (should I be in neutral when doing it?)

I know that sounds like a nOOb question but...ok so yeah it is.

Everything you said was correct Chris. It is ok to go 2 --> 4HI or vice versa.

Yeah, N for 4HI to 4LO. You can shift on the fly if you are under 50MPH from 2 to 4HI or vice versa. I also slow way down.

Below 50 mph for 2hi to 4hi... personally I slow way down.. and completely stop with clutch in for 4hi to 4low. No need to goto neutral. Or if all else fails look up.. complete instructions are on the visor

I checked my owners manual for a 1998 4Runner and with an automatic on a 3rd gen you definitely have to put the transmisson in neutral, shift into 4lo, and then put the transmission back into the gear you want.

I seem to recall this was the same when I had a 1995 4Runner

Under 50 mph from 2HI to 4HI. If I remember right it is under 18 mph from 4HI to 4LO, but don't quote me on that. I have yet to need 4LO but if I did I would just stop and then shift it. Check your visor or owners manual. Both will tell you what to do.
