So is the picture you posted above the thing that needs replaced? Do you have to splice the wires or is it a plug only.

I am replacing mine today if this is right....
Thanks

Thats the correct switch that needs to be replaced. No splicing, thats just a 2 pin plug that you will unplug. Then take a 27mm socket to the switch and unscrew it and replace. Plug wiring harness back in....wa la!

I just wanted to add my experience here too. I have a 2001 4runner ltd and had the same stuck in 4wd with flashing lights issue. After lots of messing around I tested the two 4wd position switches mounted on top of the actuator at the rear face of the transfer case. Pulled the one to the rear of the vehicle off and put an ohm meter on it, open when out and 3 ohms when pushed in. Pulled the inner one off, open when out, depressed switch and still open. The reason I know it is this switch is I took the two pin connector and shorted it, drove it for 2 seconds, pushed the 4wd switch in and then back out, went back into 2wd after many failed attempts before this. Ordered part from the Stealership at $79 and will be putting it in this weekend. I will post the part number for it when I pick it up.

My runner started doing the same thing right before I deployed. It would flash for 5-10 minutes and then finally disenguage. This is a great thread, thanks.

I had a similar problem but my problem was with the transfer case switch indicator (similar part) with part number 84222-12010 and was located on the rear face of the transfer case on top of the actuator (front sensor). Same problem where it was stuck in 4wd but the lights were flashing and it would not come back out.

I have 99 4runner 4wd and considering that the tires are almost bald, every time it rains I have no choice but to put it in 4wd because I spin the tires on every hill. Anyways, everytime I hit the button, it usually flashes about 20 times and it goes in. Everytime I take it out, it flashes about 20 times and then comes out just fine. Would this sensor speed up the process? Sounds like it might be worth it.

HI everyone...I am new here and stumbled upon this thread. I have a 1999 4Runner Limited. I was detailing it and hit the 4wd button...now it's engaged but won't disengage. Sound familiar? light is blinking and I'm obviously not in 2wd. Took it to the mechanic and he said that they would have to change the actuator and it will cost $1800.00 because it is inside the transfer case... Is this accurate?
Is there an actuator actually inside the transfer case?
Thanks,
Gus

Sometimes mine does that, drive around pressing hte button on and off, waiting a bit in between, and it will stop, or find a straight part, and pull back the 4wd lever, let it engage, then with the button off, push hte lever back forward, and it should be off. If that wont make it stop flashing, then youll have to fix stuff.

Same Problem

So I have the same problem to some of these posts...I have a 1999 4runner limited, and the 4WD light had been blinking for about a week now. I believe it is stuck in 4WD. So I was reading all the posts here and I kinda have an idea of what you guys are talking about, but I'm not very gifted when it comes to fixing cars...sooo I was hoping to get a little bit more of layman's terms...I have no idea what you guys are talking about with regard to actuator and well most of the other stuff...I have noticed that in most cases the replacement of part number 84222-35070 seems to be the answer and that it only took some of u 10-20 minutes to do...soo I am thinkin about ordering that part, but I want to make sure I replace it correctly and do or don't do what needs to be done...

So if someone could
A) verify that that indeed would be the part they think would work

B) give me a short step by step direction on how to replace the part

Any help is greatly appreciated!!

Justin

justin,

Send me an email to (falshooter at msn dot com) and I'll email you the pictures?

I'll see what I can do to make a few new pictures and have the parts highlighted to make it easier for you to troubleshoot your Yota.

99SC4Runner, I wanted to give you serious props for starting this thread and saving people thousands of dollars! This thread started over a year ago and it's still relevant and helpful. This is exactly what I love about Yotatech - great info from very helpful people who are always willing to help.

I think the mods should "sticky" this thread so that it will be seen by all members so they can find out the information and troubleshoot their 4WD systems before they dump a lot of money at their Toyotas from the dealers.

Thumbs up It Worked!!!

Just here to report that I fixed my truck without giving a dime to my local stealership! I want to personally thank Doug (99SC4Runner) for helping me problem solve. Problem solved for $38 and 15 minutes under the truck!

My wife's 01 4Runner is having the same or similar issue. The 4wd + center dot light has been blinking ever since she pressed the 4wd button, and we're not sure if 4wd is really engaged. The other symptom is that when making slow tight turns, there's some resistance on the steering, and speed, and then one of the tire slips. Is one of the 3 diffs locked? I'm no expert on SUV's.

My question is: How do I know which of the 2 parts to replace?
84222-35070, $35-60
84222-12010, $77.48 Transfer indicator Switch.

Any help is appreciated.
Thanks
