4WD Shifting
I'm going to Tahoe again and this time in my 2nd Gen. Though i'm almost certain i won't need to shift in 4Low, how do i? I'm not going to say what i've tried to get into it and save some face.

Is it different with different trannies? I put my tranny shifter into Neutral and shift the 4x4 lever forward to 4L, then tranny shifter back to Drive and away she goes.
I know a buddy of mine tried reefing on the lever while he was in Drive, so don't feel bad about anything you've tried.

Are you sure that the transfercase directions are not on a sticker on the back of the sun visor? It was kind of a joke, but that is where they put them.

I think to engage in 4Lo, you must be stopped as it is actually engaging a whole new set of gears. Someone feel free to correct me if I'm wrong.
BTW- I know that in my 92 5 Spd., the gears will grind if I try shifting to 4Lo, while the truck is moving, even in neutral (or with the clutch in).

Yeah mine shifts fine with a little "click" when I'm stopped, however if I'm moving in the slightest, the grinding occurs enough to shake the whole shift column.

I think it should be on the back of the driver visor. But anyways, I always slow down to a crawl and shift into 4lo, however, I do feel a slight clunk. I think you're supposed to be stopped to do it, but I've never had a problem.
Oh, and I don't shift into neutral or anything. Just slide the shifter down to 4lo.

Is that the case for all 2nd gens (not needing to be in neutral) or is Steve just one of the lucky ones?

nope, you can put it into 4lo at like at any slow speed. I have put it into 4 low at like 5mph and no noise at all and i have a 95 auto 4runner. It would suck to have to stop to put it into 4 wheel drive. I use mine ALL the time, even on dry pavement.

It has to be in N with the brake on (complete stop) for the 3rd gens. I believe that the t-case gets a feed from the brake on/off switch (at least that is the way ford does it). I have always been stopped when putting it into 4 low on my 4Runner..

Grunt!!
I believe I've been in N with the brake on to put it in 4Lo, also. I'm not sure if there are other ways to do it, I've always done it that way.
The last time I used it was a nice steep hill climb, before that, it was pulling out a stump in 4Lo (turfing my lawn with all 4 BFG's were chewing topsoil in the process...:rolleyes: ) Came out nicely though... Dynamite might have been easier on the turf...
