I've got a rattle in my 4WD shifter. It doesn't sound like a noise that is coming from the transfer case. It sounds like the rattle is inside the car. I hear it usually when accelerating and have found that if I move the shifter forwards or backwards a little bit that I can make it stop temporarily. It's not too loud but is beginning to get annoying. I was wondering if anyone has had the same problem and what I need to do to fix it. I just want to know what to fix before I start tearing my console apart. Just to clarify things, I have the actual shifter (like the automatic shifter) and not stick that goes to the transfer case. Thanks for the help.

I haven't experienced the rattel you are describing, but I think it could be those little plastic plates that surround the shift lever. The4 other day when I was in 4WD, I noticed the plates were all bunched up and I could see down into the shifter. I just slid them around with my finger and now they move like they should when I shift into 4WD. Just a stab in the dark...

The problem was where the transfer case linkage mounts to the back of the transfer case. There is a rubber cover around it kind of like a shock. Anyways, I took the piece off that actually mounts to the transfer case. Inside of it is a ball joint that has two metal bushings that are supposed to go around it. The bushings were out of wack and thus causing the rattle. So I just put them back the way they were supposed to go and added a little grease. Now that everything is back together, I can no longer move the linkage at that point. I'm pretty sure this has fixed it but I have yet to drive it because I'm waiting for the silicon to dry in that hole in my transfer case.

I just thought I'd let the world know in case someone else was having the same problem.

Well actually I have the same thing. I always figured it was the chain getting stretched or something. I'll take a look-see at the linkage to see if it solves my problem. Just when it gets annoying enough to decide its time to try and fix it, the solution is staring me in the face. One more reason why I love this job (I'm on the internet all day)
