4wd prob

A friend of mine recently recommended this board to me. This is my first post.

99 4 Runner Limited with about 80,000 miles

My problem first started when I had a rat crawl up into my engine and chewed up my temp sensor wire. After I took my 4 runner into the Toyota dealer and they fixed a damaged wire harness and it seemed to work perfectly again.

Several months later (after using all wheel drive off and on through snow storms) I tried to get into 4wd high and nothing happened. The all wheel drive switch works perfectly but when I try to use the lever to go into 4wd high or low nothing happens. It is almost as though it is not hooked up. My question is, is this an electrical problem resulting from the rat or is this something mechanical the dealership accidentally forgot to hook back up?

Sounds like a computer problem to me. Maybe have the dealer read any trouble codes from the ecu.

good luck

I've been having problems with my 4wd as well, it wouldn't engage in the beginning of my last off-road trip. I was very upset because everybody was up the hill, and I was still stuck at the bottom trying to figure the stupid thing out. Finally when I gave up and turned around, I hit a bump and the 4wd light switched on, which mean that the 4wd was engaged. Before I thought it was only a light problem, but it turned out that my 4wd really wasn't working.

so what should I do? You can shift into 4wd, but the light doesn't turn on and it doesn't engage......

I don't know how the 4WD is set up on the 3rd gens. But in the 2nd gens it is controlled by vacuum. So if there is a broken vacuum hose somewhere it may cause the 4wd to not work. It's a long shot, but look around for anything broken lines or wires. Usually when you have a vacuum leak, you will hear a hissing noise too.

Good Luck
