Question 4WD not working

I have a 1997 4Runner V6SR5 with 5spd manual transmission. I shifted the truck into 4wd last week and the light didn't come on. It would go into 4lo so I know the transfer case is working fine. I know the front end is not locking up because when in 4hi and doing a tight turn it feels just like 2wd - no shudderring or jumping. Does anyone have any idea what the most likely problem is? I checked the fuse inside the truck - it's OK. I assume it's a switch or solenoid or something?

is your transfer case the push button 4x4 or the manual shift? if the light isnt coming on i would assume its a problem with the transfer case and not the ADD system. if your transfer case is the ty push button 4x4 one welcome to hell because once those things start having problems they never stop...

It's not the push button type. It's a 5 spd. manual trans. with manual 4wd shifter. I'm going to go underneath tomorrow and have a look around. I thinkit's either a switch on the transfer case or a vacuum line associated with the front diff.. Not sure yet

Went underneath today. Front driveshaft spins when in 4wd so it would seem it's electrical/vacuum. Now starts the fun part...

I have same truck except 1999. I had exactly same problem (no 4H, 4L fine)when the truck was still in warranty. I had the dealer doing the 30k at the same time and they said a mouse had made a nest and eaten one of the wires. Not covered against abuse by animals in the warranty but they didn't charge me. I had been traveling out of the country for six weeks so the little beggars had time to wreak their little havoc on my tranny.

Update, 4wd started working again, no reason for it as I didn't ever find the original problem. Can't complain though. Keeping fingers crossed...

Mine would do something similar. The guy I bought it from had prolly never had it in 4wheel drive. But any way I noticed it more while hunting. Riding along in 2wheel and shift into 4hi it was slo to engage I could bump the tranny to neutral and the light would come on and engage. Same thing coming out I can bump it into neutral and it comes right out of gear and the light goes out. I think the exrsa few rpms get enough vaccum to operate. After a week of hunting in and out of 4hi it quit and works just fine now.On mine I wil go with the lack of use . 4lo always did fine.
