I am going to be getting a 2004 limited 4runner. I plan on lifting it in about 1.5-2 years with a body lift (if working with xreas at that time) or do some further mods and do a suspension lift. I plan on getting into offroading more (upto moderate stuff) (I have done some minimal stuff with my current stock Explorer)
In the meantime, I wanted to upgrade my tires to BFG ATs. The limited comes with Dunlops that are 265 65 17. If I keep the17 " wheels then I will have to get the 265 70 17 s as those are the only size available from BFG that will fit (the next ones up are 285 70 17 which I don't think will fit). I had a few questions that maybe you guys can answer:

If I got new wheels now, would I need to get new ones when I lifted b/c I would have to change the offset on the wheels?

If I got new wheels now, what is recommended? (make, model, material) Does 15 or16" matter?

If I got new wheels now, how can I figure out what tire size I can get away with without rubbing?

FirstToy, thanks for the link.! I had read it before, but totally forgot about that info in there, it helped. It looks like I'll go with the 265 70 17 s. I also noticed you were thinking of GY MTRs, still going with those? What percentage of time are you on road? Are you getting them siped (syped?)? Do you know anyone that has them? If so, how have their experiences been with tread life? Thanks!

Also...going from 265 65 17 to 265 70 17 there shouldn't be a problem with the spare and the class III hitch? I should be able to fit it in there, right?

I remember reading a thread that said it would be tight under there, but that the 265/70-17 could fit. Can't find it right now, though.

I have the 265-70-17 Dueler Revo on the stock rims and have no rub.

Just from an eyeball perspective, I don't think the hitch will fit if you put the 70 series in the spare.

Well I've had the Revo's for almost a month now and here are my initial observations:

1. I HAD an intermittent rear headliner rattle that went away when the new tires were installed.

2. I had my dealer do the mounting and balancing and they did a great job. No vibration and no tire slip.

3. For some reason, the dealer inflated them all to 29 PSI and the ride was pretty bad compared to the Dunlop. I aired them up to 35 PSI all around and the ride comfort is almost identical with that PSI.

4. They are extremely quiet.

5. The day after they were installed we had a typhoon that dumped about 8 inches of rain and I drove through some pretty wicked rain storms and experienced no hydroplaning. No problems with dry driving, cornering or making the XREAS work around curves.

6. Much better traction driving on the beaches in pretty soft/deep sand. I haven't had any problems with the sand in H4WD.

And, as you said FirstToy, the truck looks ALOT better with the bigger tires. I looked at a new 04 at the dealer and they had the Dunflop H/T mounted. Didn't look impressive.

Woody, I'm officially jealous of your 4th Gen. You get all the goodies like power folding mirrors (required for my garage, don't ask why), a proven V-6, and you sent me over the edge when I learned about your Torsen REAR diff.

You've almost convinced me to try Griot's products too, but I really do like P21S products for their wet look even on lighter colors.

To the topic: Herman, if you have the new hitch, you're probably good to go with the 70 series spare. I saw one today, and it drops much lower than the original hitch that most of us have, potentially giving better clearance for a higher profile tire. Of course the other bits under there could get in the way, but do a comparison using the www.tirerack.com site and get out a tape measure.

The specs for the 4th Gen 17 inch aluminum factory rims are 17x7.5 with a 30mm offset.

There is also a guy here, 02Runner, who has some aftermarket rims and 265-70-17 tires installed.

Do a search for 02Runner posts and you'll see the rims he got.

I took a look at Allied Wheels, the black simulated beadlocks, which look awesome! I had a question on backspacing and offset, I thougt they were the same? I guess I'm somewhat confused. If the stock wheel has 30 mm of offset, then about how much backspacing and offset (I figure close to 30) would I need to keep things similar to prevent rubbing? Thanks!

Personally I would wait until you lift. You'll probably want to stuff bigger tires under it after you lift.

BTW: a larger spare the size you mentioned will fit, you'll just have to air it down first. Then you can use a newly purchased PowerTank to air it up!

Luckily, the with the BFG's 265/70/17's on the stock rim on the spare fit without any problem. No airing down and the hitch still fits without touching the tire. Plenty of room.
