4runner wont start
it worked yesterday. i didnt leave any lights on or anything like that. i have a fairly new optima yellow top battery in there thats not more than 3 or 4 months old.
could excessive amounts of rain have anything to do with this? we are getting some of that other hurricane's weather...
it doesnt even click over.
ive had it with this heap.

I understand you're frustation. My 89 has been pretty reliable for the last 15 years, but I have been having starting problems (sometimes very intermittent) for the last 2 years. If it's not clicking at all, it sure sounds like a battery or cable issue. You could be right that all the water has zapped something, but maybe it's something with the battery. You could check the battery with a multimeter or pull it out and take it somewhere for a free test.

I know that when my alternator was going out sometimes my 90 4 runner wouldn't even turn over or even click, but when I jumped it off it started right up.

Just wondering if you had figured out what was wrong. I think my 94 runner may be doing the same thing. It usually starts right up but sometimes I turn the key, get a click, turn it back off and try again. Usually it starts right up but I have had to roll start it or jump it. No other signs though.
I got my battery and charging sytem checked at Advance and they said it was definitely the battery. One day it wouldn't start at all or wouldn't keep a charge so I took the battery to walmart to get a new one and it tests good..twice.
I found Romad's post about replacing the wire that runs from the positive to the relay box and did that with a 6 guage wire....I got it started again but it's still doing the occassional click when I try to start.

possible solution: take off the positive and negative parts to ur posts and clean the posts. my battery had a little bit of corrosion, and wouldnt even click. if that doesnt work, maybe ur starter is done.

thought i would add in i recently went thru simalar problems with my 87 i finally had a new starter put in my mechanic said these are known to go out on toyotas one way to tell is to hit with a hammer while someone tries to turn it over i have not tried this myself .... also replacing the starter is something you can do yourself if you have the time ... so give it a shot see what happens .... to those of you with heavy rain have you checked your distributor cap this was a problem with my old bronco i would have to wait for it to dry out before i could start it .
