4Runner Transmission Shift Solenoid location???

Hi there, my 2000 4runner is pulling up a code for the trans shift solenoid. I ordered the part (i hope the right one), I'm just not sure exactly where this thing is located. It should be on the drivers side of the tranny on the out side. Any info to enlighten me on how, where, anything about the solenoids repacement would be great. Otherwise it's crawl under there and go for it. Thanks for ANY help.

J-Ball.

On the outside??? As far as I know all the shift solenoids are on the valve body. You don't have to remove the valve body but this writeup on removing the valve body may help:
http://members.cox.net/mgriese5/Level10.html

You need to drop the tranny pan and remove the ATF filter screen (this would be a good time to replace it) and figure out which solenoid you need to replace. Be very carefull about contaminates in there, things as small as lint from a rag can cause problems with the solenoids.

They're on the valve body, which is inside the trans. You'll have to drain the fluid and drop the pan.

From what I understand there is 3 solenoids. So my question is how do I know which of the 3 solenoids is acting up? Can I tell from the code? Can I test the solenoids or clean them? Thanks for any help.

What code did you get? Here are a few of the many choices:

P0750 Shift Solenoid "A"
P0751 Shift Solenoid "A" Performance or Stuck Off
P0752 Shift Solenoid "A" Stuck On
P0753 Shift Solenoid "A" Electrical
P0754 Shift Solenoid "A" Intermittent
P0755 Shift Solenoid "B"
P0756 Shift Solenoid "B" Performance or Stuck Off
P0757 Shift Solenoid "B" Stuck On
P0758 Shift Solenoid "B" Electrical
P0759 Shift Solenoid "B" Intermittent
P0760 Shift Solenoid "C"
P0761 Shift Solenoid "C" Performance or Stuck Off
P0762 Shift Solenoid "C" Stuck On
P0763 Shift Solenoid "C" Electrical
P0764 Shift Solenoid "C" Intermittent

Yes the FSM has some tests but I'm not sure how accurate they are. In any case you should probably become acquainted with a FSM. Most of the parts of these free on-line Tacoma FSM links will be useful with 4runners too.

I believe it was P0750. I will try to find my notes to make sure or read the code again. It seems to drive fine with just some shuddering going up hills at speed. Does P0750 "A" refer to solenoid 1?
Thanks so much for the help.

First off, Thank all of you very much for the help that you have given me on this. This is a great forum, with lots of knowledge and cool people. Thank you!

P0770 Shift Solenoid Valve "E" (5) is the code that my runner pulled up. Does that tell which of the solenoids should be replaced? Is that Solenoid 5?

FYI The symptom that I'm experancing is; when going up long steep hills at speed 60-70 mph when the truck downshifts out of O.D. it will shudder for 4-5 seconds then clears up and pulls the rest of the hill strong. Thanks for any info.

I found this for P0770:

Need to find page DI-378 in the manual

Well I found the page but only by down loading the full FSM file and now its in pdf form and I can't figure out how to post it.

Here's some bits of it:
SYSTEM DESCRIPTION
The ECM uses the signals from the Throttle position sensor,
Air–flow meter and crankshaft position sensor to monitor the
engagement condition of the lock–up clutch.
Then the ECM compares the engagement condition of the
lock–up clutch with the lock–up schedule in the ECM memory
to detect mechanical trouble of the shift solenoid valve SL,
valve body and torque converter clutch.

DTC No. DTC Detecting Condition Trouble Area
P0770
Lock–up does not occur when driving in the lock–up range
(normal driving at 80 km/h [50 miles per hour]), or lock–up remains ON
in the lock–up OFF range.
(2–trip detection logic)
Shift solenoid valve SL is stuck open or closed.
Valve body blocked up or stuck.
 Lock–up clutch

INSPECTION PROCEDURE
1 Check shift solenoid valve SL operation.
PREPARATION:
(a) Remove the oil pan.
(b) Remove the shift solenoid valve SL.
CHECK:
(a) Applying 490 kPa (5 kgf/cm2, 71 psi) of compressed air,
check that the solenoid valve does not leak air.
(b) When battery voltage is supplied to the shift solenoid
valve, check that the solenoid valve opens.
OK:
(a) Solenoid valve does not leak air.
(b) Solenoid valve opens.

If the solenoid is not good (NG) replace it, if OK check valve body (See page DI–363).
NG Repair or replace the valve body.
If OK
Replace the torque converter clutch
(See page AT–24 or AT–30).

So now we can say IF it is a solenoid problem its the SL solenoid which according to this page: http://www.ncttora.com/fsm/2000/Repa...ion/parloc.pdf is the solenoid nearest the front of the valve body. If its not the solenoid then its probably the valve body or torque converter clutch.

No problem OBDII is pretty cool. If you know how to listen, your truck will tell you what's probably wrong with it and with a FSM you can narrow it down.

I just went through a P0773. Unfortunately, Solenoid E is in the upper valve body, which means you have to drop it. I wasn't comfortable doing mine, so I went to the local tranny shop, and paid to have it done. I can't remember if it was $300 or $500.

Here is how it went down for me: I drove with the CEL on for almost a year, the tranny was just using another solenoid to do E's job. Well, when the battery went dead, the tranny "forgot" that E was bad, and tried to use it, which got it stuck in 3rd gear.
