on ice or snow my bald michelin cross terrains will just spin and not have traction, but my spare (bridgstone H/T 689) won't even spin at all...that means we have an open differential?? from what i understand an open differential will apply torque equally to both tires, BUT is limited to the amount until it will not make a tire slip on ice.

Now my question....will winter tires greatly increase my 2wd traction MORE then an LSD swap?? the way i see it, open diffs are useless in slippery conditions (i live in Canada = winter = ice).

LSD + tires = teh winnorz on snow. Just be prepared to unwind the steering sooner with an LSD, as the tail tends to step sideways when powering out of turns.

As always, tires to match terrain and conditions first. Then traction devices. A spool does you no good if you're on slicks on ice, but a set of studded snowtires on ice, with an open diff will often let you drive away.
